Reinstalling SCSM 2012 SP1 -- installation fails on Finalize step "while executing a custom action:RollbackCleanup" -- absolutely stumped! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I uninstalled a previous installation of SCSM 2012 in our lab environment because the person who installed it is didn't give anyone else permissions and they weren't available to make the change.  Since then, I've tried to install SCSM 2012 multiple times and it fails every time during the Finalize step with the error shown in the picture below.

    Error Message

Things I've tried and double checked:

    • I am running the install with a domain admin account
    • I'm specifying a domain user service account during install which is local administrator on the machine
    • I rebuilt the performance counters
    • I'm running SQL 2k8 R2 SP2
    • .Net 3.5.1 is installed

I see the following message in the System Event Log during setup:

Event 7036 - The System Center Data Access Service service entered the running state.

Event 7031 - The System Center Data Access Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

It appears as though this happens 18 times before the service is no longer restarted and is left terminated.

Any thoughts or help on how to get this to work would be greatly appreciated!  Log excerpts are below as well as a link to the full log file at the end.

Errors in the log that make me go "hmm…"  I changed my domain and username in the logs to "DOMAIN" and "user" respectively.

  • This is just a guess but I see:

    "Executing op: ActionStart(Name=_ExecuteSqlScripts,Description=Configuring Database,Template=[1])"

    then an error.

Is the domain admin account you are using a SQL admin?

  • Hi Rob,

The Domain Admin group is a member of the local Administrators group on the box and BUILTIN\Administrators is a member of the sysadmin role on the SQL server.  Therefore, the domain admin account I'm using to do the install should be a SQL admin through inheritance, correct me if I'm wrong..

  • That's the default security so yes, you should be good. But a lot of people change this as they don't trust their domain admins to be SQL DBAs :)

Hard to know what the problem is.

Are you using the existing databases from the previous install or are you creating new ones?

As it is a lab are you able to use fresh system builds?

  • I dropped the previous database and I'm attempting to create a new one.

A fresh system build would be an absolute last resort.  I'd really like to try to solve this issue and find the root cause as a learning experience.  Not to mention if anyone else experiences this same problem in the future.

  • P.S. If you using the existing databases, follow the procedure here to restore the encryption key:

  • In the beginning, I initially tried to use the existing database, and ran into that issue.  I restored the keys as explained in the article you linked to, which fixed that issue.  However, after I ran into the issue I'm experiencing now, one of my troubleshooting steps was to ditch the old database and just try creating one from scratch so restoring the encryption keys should no longer be relevant, I don't think.

    Wednesday, April 10, 2013 6:37 PM
  • That is correct, you don't need to restore the keys for new databases. I know this is only a lab but if you'd rather keep the existing machines and get to the bottom of this is this something you can log a support case on?

  • I'm not exactly sure.. I'll ask to find out.  In the mean time, any other suggestions you or anyone else has would be appreciated. :)

Yes, I saw that article as well while searching for a solution.  Unfortunately,  I didn't really see any solid suggestions of things to try other than recreating the domain accounts, which doesn't make much sense to me...

  • Only other thing that I can think of right now is have you tried downloading the install source again or verifying it's checksum?

  • Make sure after you uninstall to remove all databases, install folders and (check this is from memory) the HKLM keys for I think "System Center" and there is also a MOM one. If these contain (especially the MOM one) previous install info, you can get issues. Rename the keys to .old if you are not sure so you can change them back if needed.

  • Yes, I uninstalled it through add/remove programs at one point.  Unfortunately, the DB wasn't attached when I did this and it said something about being unable to remove certain things.  So.. that could be related to the issue.  Nonetheless, I deleted the install folders, and the following registry keys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\System Center
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Operations Manager

    Still no luck... :(

  • This is awful...  I ran Windows Update and attempted to install again, and it worked.  I have no idea what changed or why it suddenly worked.  If anyone else experiences similar problems, I suggest running Windows Update. :/
    Thursday, April 11, 2013 6:17 PM
  • As a workaround could help increasing ServicesPipeTimeout to 600000. (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control). Should reboot after this change.

  • Hi proxzy,

Thanks for your suggestion; however, this didn't solve the problem.  Oddly enough, I ran Windows Update, installed everything available and it fixed the issue.  I wish I knew what update fixed it, but there were too many to guess...

  • I'm having this exact error. I'm trying to perform a fresh install of SC Service Manager. There are no previous databases, all the prequisites have been met and all permissions and groups are correct. I have no clue what the issue is.

    *Edit* 5/9/2013 @ 9:19am

Though I had this exact error, I believe my resolution might be unique, but I'm going to post it anyway. Our environment is almost all virtual servers, except for our MSSQL Cluster. The MSSQL Development server is virtual however. We encountered a similar installation problem with SQL Server 2012 where at the end of the install, it broke and rolled back. We were installing the application on a secondary partition. So instead of C:\ we would install to E:\. We traced the problem to an issue with VMWare 5.1. The issue was that the virtual machines were only recognizing the C:\ drive as writable, even though the VM was correctly set up. The problem existed outside the OS, which is impossible for the VM to recognize since all it knows is that it can't write to a drive it should be able to, causing it to throw a false error (yep, I wrote false error).

I don't know how many of you are having this problem in VMWare, but this fixed it for us.

Anyway, we were able to fix this problem by turning off the VM, going into the VMSphere settings and performing the following steps:

    RESOLUTION
    Disable HotPlug capability.

    In vSPhere

    1. Turn off VM
    2. Go to "Edit Settings" of VM
    3. Click "Options" tab
    4. Under "Settings" Click "Advanced > General."
    5. Click on "Configuration Parameters..."
    6. Click "Add Row"
    7. Insert a new row with the name "devices.hotplug" and a value of "false"
    8. Restart VM

Is there anything in the logs that tipped you off to this solution you can share?

  • I have pretty much the same log as you do. However, since it was never stated if you were installing on a VM or physical box, I didn't know if my solution would apply. But since it is the very thing that fixed my issue, I decided to share it in case anyone was installing on a similar environment.

    - I was able to resolve it using the command  line LOTCTR /R

    - And restarting the IIS service using the command line tool IISRESET

    - After this command was successfully applied I have tried to install the Service Manager Portal without any errors.
