Wsus transfer from online server to offline - problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,
at the beginning I apologize for my poor English.
I have two WSUS servers on W2k16, one with internet access (online), the other in a network separated from the internet (offline). Both servers updated, build the same 10.0.14393.2155. I regularly download patches on the server with access to the Internet. Then I use Windows Server Backup to copy the content, execute with the command wsusutil.exe export xml.gz and log, move all to the offline server. There again, Windows Server Backup for recovery, and the wsusutil.exe import command.

I have a problem with the offline server. After accepting the patches, the server starts downloading. But at some point the download stops, the server reports that it needs some files. I check in the logs is error 404 server is looking for files that are not there. I check the path carefully and in fact there are no such files. I go to the server with access to the internet which is the source for him and there are actually no files in the given location, but he does not notify me that he needs some files.

Since I use the Windows Server Backup tool and theoretically copy the content 1: 1 and exports the database and then everything import on the server offline why this happens? Do I do something wrong? Is there any procedure how give updates to Wsus servers without access to the Internet?Maybe this is a matter of incorrect configuration? On the offline server (it is set as primary) as the source of patches we have selected not Microsoft Update but alone on itself (a setting called update source and proxy server).

  • Hi Maras86,

Can you share with us the logs where you see the error?

You have the wrong procedure. You should be using wsusutil.exe

Although the below mentions SCCM, this is for WSUS.

I use wsusutil.exe import package_name.xml.gz package_name.log in the disconnected server.

  • I have the impression that we do not understand each other. I do eveything as described in these links. In WSUS server offline, I first of all backup (restore) WSUSContent catalog using Windows Server Backup, and then from cmd as administrator, import using wsusutil.exe command. We're not talking about any computers that are or should be connected to the WSUS server. There is no problem here. The problem is in downloading the patches after they are accepted (approve). The download stops and the server reports that some files are missing, even though the whole has been uploaded from the backup from the server which no files have reported that it needs
