Setting up L2TP VPN breaks PPP on SBS2011?

Question
-
I have been struggling with my SBS2011 for a while, but I have it running now and can access it from the outside through VPN using a PPP connection. The server is not the DHCP server, that is done on the firewall.
PPP seems to work fine now (thanks, Niels), but I can't use it if I need to connect to server via a hotspot on my iPhone, and I cannot use it to VPN from my iPad either (Apple disabled PPP a while ago). So I tried to set up an L2TP connection. My problem is that when I do so, I can't connect to the server anymore, not even through PPP. To get access back, I have to basically remove everything that I did to establish L2TP. And I don't understand why that is. Isn't L2TP an alternative to PPP (with additional security)? Why would setting up L2TP break PPP? And I tried it several times. Same result every time. At some point something flashed up about a security certificate being expired. Are there security certificates involved, and which one would that be for L2TP?

Thanks. That is precisely the document that I used to set up the L2TP connection. Unfortunately it does not mention any certificates (I think I saw that error message pop up on the client), and it does not mention why an L2TP connection would break an existing and working PPP connection. Are there any settings that make it impossible to use a PPP connection once an L2TP connection is defined?
