Windows server 2019 Standard with FRS to windows Essentials RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are planning on implementing a windows server 2019 standard with File replication to other remote servers.  Was hoping to run these as Windows server essentials as they won't be domain controllers (leaving that for the Windows Server 2019 standard).  Essentially we are looking at a way of saving costs, rather than having a number of full servers.

Is this possible, or does the Essentials server have an issue sitting on the same domain (although it is not a domain controller) as another server that is the domain controller?

Is there another option that is better?

So far as i know ,windows server essentials must act as domain contoler and with full fsmo .

I am not sure if you can use all windows server 2019 standard servers to implement your idea.

  • Stephen,

The Essentials server must be a domain controller AND the owner of all FSMO roles. This makes the Essentials server a bad choice for a branch office.

Either use the Windows Server Essentials on our main office and join another member server in that branch office to your existing domain. That member server server can be a DC in that remote office. Both can do DFSR. FRS is no longer available on 2019.
