WSUS is no longer doing updates after forcing Windows 1909 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was asked to post here to inquire if anyone knows why or has a solution.

Bottom line is WSUS via AJ Tek script no longer works.

All I did was download the actual Windows update, manually installed it on each PC, then after day 1 with no anything I then downloaded and applied the Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 10 November 2019 Update (1909) at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/100591 and applied it to Server.

However, since then, zero WSUS results via the AJ Tek paid script.

Adam said to post here for any solutions.

Content of my support ticked is below, real identity of domain and server has been renamed for privacy.

This is outside the scope of support as it doesn't relate to the WSUS Automated Maintenance product itself.

Please create a new thread on Spiceworks (https://community.spiceworks.com/) and tag me +Adam (AJ Tek) or create a new thread on TechNet (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/home?forum=winserverwsus). Both communities are great and will help.

Verify that the products are selected properly for WSUS

    Nothing, nada. Ever since 1909.

1909 was not being made available/pushed, so I manually ran the update on each machine.

However, since then there is not even any "definition" (Windows Defender) updates, which are normally multiple.

Below is the output for 2 days.

    Any insight as to why/what?

Today, I even ran this, no change:

Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 10 November 2019 Update (1909)

  • Hi,

Thank you for posting again. but I am sorry that I did not understand your question very clearly. What questions do you want to ask specifically?
If you need to get an update for the Windows 10 version 1909 system, consider adding the following products to WSUS:

    • Windows 10, version 1903 and later

If this is not your question, please consider your question in a brief description.
    Thank you for your cooperation.

    Regards,
    Yic

  • OK, so I saw that 1909 was available in WSUS now, and I have checked only the following:

Under products, WSUS, Defender, Windows 10 1903 and later and under Classifications only Critical updates, Definition updates, Security updates and Updates.

Nothing is happening, however the Server is filling up with 500GB of downloaded each day bringing the Server to a halt.

I delete the WSUS files to clear up room, they keep coming back and no updates are occuring

    Help?

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your reply.
    Please consider the following checks:

    1. Regarding the updated files, please consider checking the configuration of the update files in the WSUS console, and whether "Download update files to this server only when updates are approved" is checked.
Then as for "Download express installation files", please consider the actual situation, this function will store more files on the server.

    2. In the update view of the WSUS console, add the "Supersedence" column. "Decline" for the following two types of status updates:
This update has been superseded by another update and superseded another update as well.
This update has been superseded by another update.

    3. Consider canceling the existing approval and running the WSUS console > Options > Server Cleanup Wizard.

Hope the above can help you.

    Regards,
    Yic

  • Yic,

    Thank you for your pointers.

However, after doing the Server Cleanup Wizard there show 252Gb of downloads queuing up and starting to download, yet the only items shown are Windows Defender updates I approved.

This will surely fill the HD by AM.

Therefore, what might be the procedure to forget all previous anything and start fresh without reinstalling?  Such as resetting the database to not download unnecessary files which have been done already.

ALL machines are updated with only Defender updates and yesterdays 1909 patch.

  • Hi,

Please refer to the following steps:

    1. In the elevated Powershell of the WSUS server, run:
      >  (Get-WsusServer).CancelAllDownloads()
This will stop all ongoing downloads.

    2. Perform decline on all approved updates.

    3. After completing the above operations, observe whether the download information of the WSUS console changes to the state of no file download as shown in the screenshot.

Hope the above can help you.

  • Hi,

Since this thread has not made any updates for a long time, a summary of the current process is provided for reference when continuing to follow up later:

    • Issue Symptom
The WSUS content folder is too large.

    • Possible Cause
There may be too many updates approved.

    • Troubleshooting Steps so far
Inspections have been suggested from a product selection and approval perspective.

    Yic
