Windows Update Error 0x80070057 - Windows 10 Pro 1903 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys. I've been struggling to resolve a Windows update issue affecting 100's of Windows 10 machines running version 1903 for some time with no luck... We are using WSUS 10.0.14393.2969 on Windows 2016.

What I'm seeing on the client machines is:

There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later.
    2019-09 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64 (KB4514359) -Error 0x80070057

I've tried the usual fixes, i.e. renaming SoftwareDistribution folder, "UxOption"=dword:00000000, "IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled"=dword:00000000 but with no luck...

The following referenced article suggests that 0x80070057 may be caused by a proxy issue - however for testing purposes I've completely blanked the IE internet proxy settings, and ensured that 'netsh winhttp show proxy' is showing 'direct'...

So with all this said - would somebody be able to provide a clue as to where I should look next?

    Thanks, Ash.

  • Hi Ash,

The log prompts: "Error occurred while downloading update", I think we should start with the check of the update file.

    1. Please consider separately reviewing these updates and first approve the SSU (KB4524569).

    2. Consider the update view in the WSUS console, add the "File Status" column, and check if the update mentioned in the question has downloaded the complete file. If there is a download failure, please try downloading again, or decline this update and re-approve.

    3. If you continue to prompt, consider troubleshooting the client on the client according to the "Fix Windows Update errors" guide.

  • Hi Yic,

    Thanks for your response :).

As we are currently in a position where all of the needed updates are released - do you suggest to decline all of them minus the SSU? Or would perhaps setting a deadline to the SSU update suffice?

FYI: I've just deployed the SSU to a test workstation via DISM and rebooted it... When doing a check for updates after the reboot I can see that the SSU is no longer required - however the device is still failing to install the remaining updates. (Interestingly - the device is happy to install the malicious software removal tool without issue).

Also, I've double-checked WSUS, and the file status for each of the updates is indeed 'Ready for installation'.

Another interesting observation - I'm seeing the same 0x80070057 error when attempting to install / update apps via the Microsoft Store.

    Thanks,
    Ash

I am sorry that I did not express it clearly.
Normally, if the SSU is included in the update list, I recommend first approving the SSU, waiting for the SSU installation to complete, and then approving the installation of other updates, as the new SSU can resolve some installation issues.

Is there any improvement in running the "Fix Windows Update errors" guide?
