EMET 4.0 Beta Suggestion: Import XML Profiles Using GUI

    General discussion

  • Hi everyone,

I wanted to provide a suggestion for the initial configuration of EMET 4.0 Beta. In the User’s Guide on Pages 17 – 18 the Protection Profiles of EMET are explained.

The GUI of EMET (EMET_GUI.exe) does not allow the user to import these protection profiles. With EMET 3.0 and 3.5 Tech Preview these profiles could be previously imported as follows:

Click on Configure Apps within EMET, then click File->Import as shown by the screenshots below and finally navigate to the relevant XML file located in the following folder:

    32 bit Windows:

    C:\Program Files\EMET\Deployment\Protection Profiles

    64 bit Windows:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\EMET\Deployment\Protection Profiles

EMET 3.0 or 3.5 Tech Preview:

Within EMET 4.0 Beta, only the following options are available:

EMET 4.0 Beta does by default already include the Recommended Software Profile pre-imported, however I wished to also import the Popular Software profile. I have installed EMET 4.0 Beta on Windows 7 64 bit SP1.

In order to work around this issue I used the EMET_Conf.exe command line tool from the Command Prompt as follows:

    cd\
    C:\Program Files (x86)\
    cd EMET
    EMET_Conf.exe --import "Deployment\Protection Profiles\Popular Software.xml"

    This import was successful.

For detailed steps on accessing/using the command line tool of EMET within all versions of Windows, please see the following thread:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/emet/thread/d319ca4a-51df-4ed2-9204-856dbf15a07e

Would it be possible to add an Import option to the GUI of EMET 4.0 Beta in the same manner that was present in EMET 3.0 and 3.5 Tech Preview? This would allow users of this tool to more easily configure it to protect the applications that they use.

Please feel free to use / not use this suggestion at your discretion. If I can provide any further information, please let me know.

I have also sent the above suggestion to the EMET Feedback email address as mentioned on Page 40 of the User’s Guide.

    Thank you.
