Reference to reasons why PC is prompting for Bitlocker key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can you point me to a reference that lists the different possible reasons why a PC would be prompting for the Bitlocker key?

Is it normal that it may happen after a normal Windows update (not a major version?)
I have 2 users now who have each been prompted twice a few days apart , want to make sure it's not something in our config.

  • Reasons that the BL recovery key is needed:

-updated the bios or firmware components

    -changed the boot order

-changed the state of the secure boot setting within the bios

That's usually it. Sometimes, due to hardware bugs, the recovery key is even asked for when a laptop is simply undocked, but that is very rare.

No, windows updates are never the cause (we do all windows updates in a bitlocked network and it never happens)

  • These users certainly wouldn't have updated BIOS or changed anything boot related on purpose.

On a stretch... maybe plugged or unplugged a USB thumb drive (that was never set to "boot" from) ?

... maybe they rearranged their desk - does a Dell WD15 USB-C "dock" count ?

  • Possibly such a dock would "count".

See if you can test it out with such a dock - encrypt when docked, using a TPM 2.0 as protector, the n undock and see if the recovery key is being asked for at next reboot. If that happens indeed, please contact Dell about it, since that is nothing Microsoft/Windows can change: the docking should not interfere with Bitlocker.
