SharePoint 2013, changing sql server question (using sql alias)

    Question

  • Hi

Single server 2013 SharePoint server farm.

I have done this process before, however this time we wanted new database prefix on the database names. Will this be a problem?

So what i have done is:

    -Stop SharePoint farm

-set Readonly db - taken sql backup.

-all users are AD domain users

    -Added all login accounts

-Restored database backups to new sql server with new names (making sure that both files are correct).

The permissions on the databases are all kept and will stay the same.

So then it hit me, will sharepoint accept the new db names`?

    best regards

    Bjorn

  • if nothing else is changing than the server name, then a SQL alias will work fine... stop SP (iis, timers, etc)... move the databases (backup/restore or whatever)... add the alias on ALL SP servers... make sure SQL permissions are correct (database perms will have been moved, but server level perms need to be checked/recreated)... start SP

This should not involve changing ANY SP config options. As far as SP is aware/concerned, the database server is the same as it always was.
