Creating WebApplication on Web Front End from Application Server's Central Administration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys;

    i have the following Topology

    1. 1 Application Server.     (Central Admin is running on it.)

    2. 1 Web Front End           (Microsoft SharePoint Web Application Service running on it.)

    3. 1 Database Server.

Now, i am trying to create WebApplication from Central Admin.  The problem is, it is only creating on the IIS of Central Admin (Application Server), not on the IIS of Web Front End Server.

  • Hi.

In Central admin, services on server, choose the 'WFE' server.
On this, amek sure that the folowing two services are started, if they are not, strat them and you should be ok.

    Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application
Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service

Thats the equivalent of a WFE...

  • so, this will work ? means it will automatically create the Web Application on the WFE.  while creating  Web Application, settings of Web Application URL, and Physical Path will remain same.

    2. while creating webapplication where it will create the files    c:\inetpub....\   (no files on WFE as well APP Server).

  • Hi.

I think that you must have made some mistake when installing the server, did you use Powershell to script the install?
Anyway, I tested this exact scenario, I started the 'Foundation Web Application Service' and  the websites were added to ISS.

Perhaps you should consider reinstalling the server, then adding it back to the farm again?

    Best regards

  • hi,

I am facing the same issue here, is there any sychronisation happening with both the WFE and APP Server. I am confused how does it work.

I explicitly created the webapp/site collection using the CA of the App Server, but it got created on APP Server. When i say explicitly means the URL given was http://sptwfe01:port, but it still got created on the App Server.

Don't know, after sometime i could see it on the WFE Server. No documentation however from Microsoft on how to Install SharePoint 2010 on a 3 Server Farm (WFE, APP and DB Server).

Whats the Order of Installation (APP First, WFE next ). What if i want my CA to be hosted on APP Server along with Search and other services, Whereas all my Portal Apps hosted on WFE.

Any Help is appreciated here Please.

    Thanks

    Ram

  • Hi.

The order of things are these...

CA is just an interface for configuring the config database which is the 'real heart of the farm'. Create a web app and it will be created in IIS on EVERY server that has the two services running:
    Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application
Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Workflow Timer Service

That is how it is supposed to work. Stop the two services and the server is not a SHarePoint web server any more.

A server is not an App server because you say so, it is because it runs app services, it can still also be a web server and a CA server. Again, one single server can even hold all roles.

Same with the Central Admin role(CA), you can host it on every server in the farm. Even if you have 20 servers, they can all be CA, or none. They canb all be Web, or none. But...only one server can run the User Profile Synchronization service, but thats another story for another thread.
For the Stuck in starting, do it all over, remove the UPS service app completely, do it again and follow this article to THE LETTER!
Rational Guide to implementing SharePoint Server 2010 User Profile Synchronization
    http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx
Then, and only then, will you get the UPS working.

I hope this helps you guys? :-)
