Issue with Storage Pool Disappearing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows Server 2016 - Standard

I have a Server with a single Storage Pool, a single Virtual Disk with 5 Physical Disks.

All activity carries on fairly well. There doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with any of the disks.

Randomly, throughout a day, the Virtual disk will just disappear from the file system, and it shows in Server Manager, but if you navigate to it, it starts throwing errors. Eventually, if I reboot, it all goes back to normal. This used to happen every once in a long while, but now it's daily.

I guess I need to know 2 things:

    1. I can get to logging, and there are several logs with various activity, but which log would contain details for this activity?

    2. Anybody know what could cause this?

    Perplexed?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your question.

Based on my experience, you could collect the information from the event viewer regarding Storage Space as below.

Applications and services logs > Microsoft > Windows > Storage Spaces

You could also check file system event logs and system events for this issue. We could filter the relevant disk and NTFS incidents from the event viewer.

Furthermore, please check the virtual disk's status under your storage space by GUI or powershell.

    Get-VirtualDisk

Troubleshoot Storage Spaces Direct health and operational states

     Get-VirtualDisk | Select-Object FriendlyName,HealthStatus, OperationalStatus, DetachedReason

In addition, please also check if your system needs to update.

Hope this helps. If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,

    Michael
