  • Question

  • Hi,

Im having problems starting the User Profile Sync Service. After trying to start for about 15mins it fails with error below in Uls:

    ILM Configuration: Error 'ERR_CONFIG_DB'.

    and

UserProfileApplication.SynchronizeMIIS: Failed to configure MIIS post database, will attempt during next rerun. Exception: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException

Ive setup the accounts, service applications etc as in the guide: http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx (yes ive recreated everything and went from the beginning a dosen of times)

The thing is that we are running an sql cluster and im not sure the Forefront Identity manager connects correctly. Ive tried solving this by setting up sql aliases but im not sure how to do that for a sql cluster.

Im also getting "The Managed Metadata Service 'Managed Metadata Service' is inaccessible." in the logs but im not sure its related.

    /Erik

  • I just had the same problem. You do need to setup a SQL Alias. Use "ClusterName" as the alias and map it to "ClusterName\InstanceName" using TCP/IP.

This is how I did for my cluster, details here: http://www.wahidsaleemi.com/2010/10/err_config_db/

Also, Managed Metadata Service is required before you setup UPS so you may want to really check those errors out and resolve.

  • Hi Wahid,

I read your article and did the same.

But, I am still having the same problem. Do you have to recreate the profile service application after implementing the fix?

p.s. I was using a named instance of the form [SERVER_NAME]\[INSTANCE_NAME]. I configured the alias on SharePoint Server as [SERVER_NAME] and specified the Server as [SERVER_NAME]\[INSTANCE_NAME] over TCP/IP.

    Cheers

  • Hello Guys,

I am also having trouble in starting User profile synchronization service.

I followed all the instructions and permissions as per the article http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups2.aspx.

I am having them below errors in ULS:

    ILM Configuration: Configuring database

    ILM Configuration: Error 'ERR_CONFIG_DB'.

UserProfileApplication.SynchronizeMIIS: Failed to configure MIIS post database, will attempt during next rerun. Exception: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: ERR_CONFIG_DB

    at Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.Synchronization.ILMPostSetupConfiguration.ValidateConfigurationResult(UInt32 result)

    at Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.Synchronization.ILMPostSetupConfiguration.ConfigureMiisStage2()

    at Microsoft.Office.Server.Administration.UserProfileApplication.SetupSynchronizationService(ProfileSynchronizationServiceInstance profileSyncInstance).

My sql is setup as MSSDB01\SHAREPTINS1 (server name MSSDB01) and I used db server name MSSDB01 throughout my SharePoint 2010 installation. it worked well. Now for UPSync Service, do I need to setup an alias? I tried setting up the alias MSSDB01 as MSSDB01\SHAREPTINS1 but it losts the sql connection and even central admin did not open.

I tried other way of setting up alias SharePoint as MSSDB01\SHAREPTINS1 but still I see the above errors.

Please help me how should I setup alias/ any other thoughts.

    WM.

  • I was having similar experiences with the UPS, until I regrouped and dug in on the advice offered at HarbarNet and Microsoft TechNet:

    HarbarNet:  http://www.harbar.net/articles/sp2010ups.aspx

    Microsoft TechNet SharePoint 2010: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee721049(v=office.14).aspx

There is a 2013 version of the ee721049.aspx, just remove the (v=office.14) portion of the link above, or click on the other versions link on that page.

I ended up starting over, did not run the farm config wizard (white wizard), made sure that when I specified the backend database that I did NOT include fqdn's in either the instance nor the server name, used a setup account to install the farm, inserted the Farm account when installing the binaries with the Grey Wizard, and then adhered to the advice on both of the above pages when writing this blog post: http://thestacemeister.tumblr.com/post/42102074597/configuring-user-profile-synchronization-service

    Good Luck,

    /ss

  • Hello Erik,

we also could not start the UPS, in our case we installed the SQL 2012 client on the SharePoint server.

    https://autospinstaller.codeplex.com/discussions/484274

Like others I like to pre download Prerequisite Installer Files and Update Packages. We create a nice installation point witch include the latest version of the software.

In most cases this is recommended but: “do not use the latest SQL Native Client for SharePoint 2013”. We did use the “Microsoft Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client“ and everything seems to work accept the User Profile Service, this one could not start.

After a lot of searching we downgraded the client to “Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client” on the SharePoint server and after that we ware able to start the user Profile service (UPS).

    Our configuration:
Multiple server farm all with Windows 2012 OS.
Multiple SQL servers with Windows 2012 OS and SQL server 2012.

    Error in the ULSLog:
UserProfileApplication.SynchronizeMIIS: Failed to configure MIIS post database, will attempt during next rerun. Exception: System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException: ERR_CONFIG_DB
