DPM 2012R DB restore from failed server - unable to restore data from storage pool disks RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Guys

I inherited an ageing W2012R2 physical backup server running DPM 2012R2.

Essentially due to severe hardware failure I had to rebuild the server.

The new server was given a new name so as not to cause any unexpected clashes with the old server & fully patched.

The previous storage pool disks were successfully reconnected to the server via the iSCSI initiator & imported back in to DPM.

SQL server 2012 Management Studio & DPM were reinstalled as per Terminal Works site guide (unable to add link), patched and functioned normally.

I restored the old DB from tape & had it imported to SQL by a SQL admin.

DPMSYNC was executed & all appeared well.

When the DPM console was executed I was greeted with the error below:

Cannot find the local DPM server's entry in the database. This can happen on server rename or domain join/leave. Try restarting the DPM service then the console to automatically correct the issue. The management tab will now be disabled (ID 33448)

DPM will open once 'OK' is clicked but I am unable to restore any data from the disk backups.

The DPM service has been restarted without any improvement.

The full details from the DPM server error log is detailed below:

20:34:20.670 62 ProductionServerController.cs(589) WARNING caught DBCorruptionException with message Cannot find the local DPM Server's entry in the database. This can happen on server rename or domain join/leave events. Try restarting the DPM service to automatically correct this issue.

    105C 0BD4 10/04 20:34:21.466 35 ErrorDialog.cs(133) WARNING The management tab will now be disabled.

The log also contains numerous entries of the following warning that the 'DPM server was not found'

20:34:20.666 09 AppAssert.cs(130) WARNING DPM server not found
    105C 014C 10/04 20:34:20.666 09 AppAssert.cs(130) WARNING ASSERT: (FileName:DpmServer.cs; LineNumber:1135)
    105C 014C 10/04 20:34:20.666 09 AppAssert.cs(130) WARNING DPM server not found

    All advice appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation of your support

  • Hello,

If you want to be able to access old backups from the old DPM server, you will have to use the same server name for the newly re-installed DPM server as before.

The server name is more or less hard coded in the DPM database so it's important that the server name is the same.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Thanks for your reply Leon.

So to clarify, do you mean it is just a case of renaming the server itself or renaming the current DPM database to that of the old server name?

    Thanks

  • Yes, to restore a previously installed DPM database, you will need to use the same server name for the DPM server that was used for this DPM database.
