Web URL Availability Monitoring RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are facing many issues for Web URL monitoring from SCOM 2012 R2 UR 14

    1. We are getting many fake alerts for transaction response time, even we are getting alerts for milliseconds, and application team always push back saying this response time is acceptable.

How can we change the threshold for response time ?

How can we stop the alert completely.

    Examples:

https://xxx.xxxxx.xxx has a problem. Please see the alert context tab for details of the failure. The Transaction Response Time was 0.020601612429921 seconds.

    2. How we can monitoring the URL where we have to get authenticated by providing the user credentials ?

3 How to monitor https: web site, where to download the certs ?

    4. Is there any better alternative to monitor URL's in SCOM ?

  • Hi,

For the first question, we may create a web transaction monitoring (see below step by step example)

Monitoring your website using Microsoft Operations Manager
    https://tmitegypt.wordpress.com/2013/07/01/monitoring-your-website-using-microsoft-operations-manager/

And the timeout threshold can be adjusted here:

If the web-page requires authentication, we may configure it by edit the properties, shown as below example.

For the third question, if the computer is domain-joined and the certificate is from internal CA, it will be trusted automatically. Why we need to download (and install the cert)? We create a self-signed certificate for the web server? Please kindly clarify.

In addition, it's not suitable to discuss multiple questions in a single thread. We may discuss one question in a single post. Thank you for your kind understanding.

    Hope the above information helps.

    Regards,

    Alex Zhu

  • Not sure URLGenie will work for this scenario, but I would highly recommend you look into it and test it in a lab.  I used MSFT's built in URL monitors for years, but we would often get results that seemed false (could have been configuration error on Admin part).

I discovered this post about URLGenie and have been using it ever since.  I am using it to do basic authentication types as well as NTLM, but there are other configurations supported and it is well documented:

    >>2. How we can monitoring the URL where we have to get authenticated by providing the user credentials ?
    There are two different ways:
    a)  using web application transaction monitoring which is easy to configure authentication and its details is explain by Alex Zhu

    b) using web application availability monitoring. It is more complicated. for detail on how to SCOM Web Availability Monitoring with www/http basic authentication , please refer to the link, https://mevansit.blogspot.com/2017/03/scom-web-availability-monitoring-with.html, which require to utilize http headers.
