DPM 2012 R2 for backing up Server 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Does anyone know if MS are planning to provide an update for DPM 2012 R2 which allows it to run an agent on Server 2016?

I can see on the support matrix that DPM 2016 will allow this at present, while 2012R2 currently does not, but surely MS are not going to cripple 2012R2 going forward by not allowing it to backup 2016? This will mean upgrading licences and software on all your production DPM servers if you wish to use features like the new mixed mode clusters which let you use 2012R2 and 2016 together? Surely this will just slow up the uptake of Server 2016?

    Thanks

    Ali

  • Hi,

There are too many changes and new features in Windows server 2016 that would prohibit protection from DPM 2012 R2.  There are currently no plans to support protecting Windows Server 2016 with DPM 2012 R2.  I would plan on using a separate DPM 2016 server to protect Windows Server 2016 workloads.

  • Hi,

As noted, there are no plans to add support for protecting Windows Server 2016 using DPM 2012 R2, you must use a DPM 2016 server to protect Windows server 2016 workloads.

  • Having performed the update to DPM 2016 from 2012 R2 on four servers now, I must say the update is a fairly painless and straight forward process. The main problem I've run into is that 2016 will not back up older 2003 boxes. Unfortunately we do still have a few. So if you have 2003 and 2016 boxes you're in a bit of a tight spot. I had to create a 5th DPM 2012 box with some spare SAN storage to cover the 2003 boxes until they're completely phased out. Its good to be aware of this in advance

  • Server 2003 has been EOL for a while, so that is not much of a surprise.

  • Hi I managed to get my DPM 2012 R2 to backup my 2016 servers OK.

Successfully backing up VMs, Files, Exchange  - haven't tried SQL but Id guess it will work

Just needed to upgrade DPM to the latest updates Roll up and all seemed to work for me

    Kind Regards Adam

According to this https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/dpm/dpm-protection-matrix?view=sc-dpm-1711 it still is not supported. So it looks like if you're after support it wont work for you.

By the way i suspect that 2016 VMs could be backed up if the agent is on a non-2016 host, but the agent could not be installed onto a host or physical server which runs 2016.

Likewise DPM 2016 can backup 2003 VMs, but not be installed inside a physical or virtual 2003 box
