Sysprep fails on Microsoft.LanguageExperiencePackhu on Windows 10 build 1803 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are now creating new images based on Windows 10 build 1803. In past we had Windows 10 build 1709.

Our Windows is in the english language.

We added a langauge pack :

settings - time and language - region and language - prefered language -> hungarian

Then we do a sysprep and this results in: C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Panther\setupact.log

2018-06-21 13:35:59, Error SYSPRP Package Microsoft.LanguageExperiencePackhu-hu_17134.2.4.0_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe was installed for a user, but not provisioned for all users. This package will not function properly in the sysprep image.

    How can we fix this?

    Kr,

    Joeri

Answers

  • It seems that when adding the extra language it also installs an extra windows store package -> Microsoft.LanguageExperiencePack

It seems that this is changed in build 1803:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4057758/windows-10-local-experience-packs

In our image we always removed everything which had to do with the windows store.

We now fixed it by removing everything from windows store again after adding the language pack.

    Remove everything:
    Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
    Provision remove everything:
    Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online

  • Thank you, your answer is very helpful, sysprep is working after the two commands that you mentioned. Was unable to remove only the microsoft.LanguageExperiencePack.

Is this also the "Microsoft solution" for this problem, removing everything? Or is somebody from Microsoft around and has a better solution?

  • Thanks for this thread guys, pretty much the only one I've found specifically dealing with this issue (which I find strange!). The official "Microsoft solution" appears to be to provision the Language Pack to all users from a Language Pack ISO using Powershell, but this seems very vaguely documented to me, and I've yet to want to explore it fully.

Below is a more refined cleanup for sysprep I used based on joerifeyen's idea, that just targets the language pack.

The impact of this method appears to be that it will remove the appearance of the Language Pack being installed - however when these features are requested by a user, it seems to 'download' the Language Pack from a local cache, whereas if you don't install the Language Pack at all it will fail and say it is unavailable - unless it can pick it up and download directly from Windows Update.

In addition, before I do the Powershell commands, I set Go to Control Panel>Region>Administrative>Copy Settings, ticking the two boxes at the bottom, and this appears to be preserved in the image and (in theory) should try use the correct language pack for new profiles.

I've yet to fully test the impact of all this on the Language Pack availability, I will update if I discover any issues.

    ***

In Administrative Powershell, do the following -

get-appxpackage -allusers | select name, packagefullname

Check this list, and look for your package, eg. Microsoft.LanguageExperiencePack-GB, and its corresponding packagefullname, then ...

remove-appxpackage -allusers -package "<copy and paste the packagefullname from results>"

    eg. remove-appxpackage -allusers -package "Microsoft.LanguageExperiencePack-GB_17763.9.22.0_neutral__8wekyb3d8bbwe"

Run the first command again, and this time check that the problem package is now gone.

  • Thanks, Benweston.

    It helped me a lot!

  • Thanks BenWeston!

I had exactly the same problem as you (GB Language Pack). Your solution just got me round the SysPrep stage. I have yet to see what happens to the deployed clients in practice. I'd hope that the language pack is still available offline - as you suggest.

    More experimenting to do...

  • Cheers for feedback guys, good to know it helps.

What I do know is that it does get you past the sysprep issues, and for us at least in our envirobment with the GB language pack this then just seamlessly works for everyone and installs itself silently after deployment. I've not had any reason to revisit this since the above.

What I still don't know though (because this solved my problems, I still haven't had time to test) is where the language pack definitively comes from after doing this - whether its entirely from a cache or partially from online again, because we still have an internet connection; but there are none of the issues now with downloading or installing that we had before the language pack was added and then removed again on the image as above.

I also don't know if there may be different behaviour when using a non-standard language pack, for more obscure languages.

But it's a considered, targeted, method - and if it works it works! :) Good luck everyone.

  • I've just tested this and can confirm that the language pack installs itself automatically - after about an hour in my case. Thanks again.

  • I've got the same issue with Windows 10 1903 fresh install.
But the worst is that the Microsoft.LanguageExperiencePack doesn't even exist on my system.
Sysprep shows that it was installed but Powershell doesn't show it and can't delete.
What to do? How to live with that?

  • Hi,

The issue described in this thread is a result from the fact that sysprep doesn't support Microsoft Store content which is installed for a user, but not provisioned. So there is nothing wrong with the Local Experience Pack (LXP) being unprovisioned, but installed for a user, but it's just that sysprep doesn't like this situation.

Actually the best solution depends on what exactly you want. In some cases it's best to leave the LXP installed and provision it as an extra step before sysprepping. In other cases it could be a better idea to remove the installed LXP.

However, if you remove the LXP, you have something that's neither provisioned nor installed. But because Microsoft Store content which was installed and/or provisioned is contained in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps (except when you remove it there explicitly of course), it's still there (that's the "local cache" benweston was suspecting to be around, although I personally wouldn't call it a cache). From there Microsoft Store content can be installed again (although not provisioned!), which explains why in practice there is no notable problem, as the LXP is installed from there automatically by Windows (for example, when creating a new Windows profile which needs the Language Pack related to the LXP in casu).

    Ciao!
