Full Control users only able to edit Shared Version of page in MOSS 2007

    Question

  • Hi,

In MOSS 2007 we have a site collection that does not allow the owners to edit pages. There is no broken inheritance in the permissions, and when a user clicks "Site Actions" and then "Edit" they get a toolbar saying they are only editing the Shared Version of the page.

No pages are checked out to any other users either and the users attempting this (including the Farm account) are not able to edit these pages.

What would be the next steps to debugging this problem as it is not one I have encountered previously?

  • That toolbar is only available in a site collection where publishing has been enabled.  Those are pages based on a Publishing Layout and those pages only have a shared view.  The pages you are looking at are simple Web part pages.  They don't work the same way that publishing pages do.  Since the only thing you can do on them in the UI is add web parts they just have a shared view (editable by an admin) and a personal view.  Web parts added to the shared view will show up on everyone's view of the page.  Web parts added to the personal view will only show up for you.

  • The default for Full control users is to edit the "Shared Version" of the page when they click edit.  They can then switch to editing the personal version of the page using the welcome menu.  Click "personalize this page" and they will be editing a personal version of the page.  Remember that this is only available for regular web part pages.  Publishing pages are always shared.

  • OK - the biggest difference is that usually most pages display some kind of toolbar which allows the Check In, Save Draft and Publish setting. How do I switch over a page to get that kind of Editing Toolbar instead of the "Share View" toolbar?
