Excel Services - Workbook Cannot be Opened

    Question

  • Hi,

I've read many posts about "the workbook cannot be opened" errors but my situation is different. Some workbooks open w/o error using Excel Services, but others do not. When I re-name the workbook there appears to be no issues.

Has anyone run into this before? Re-starting Excel Services did not resolve this.

    Thanks,

    Roland

  • need more information...

So Issue is with excel Client or in browser or both.

Did you check the ULS logs for more error details....and please share it?

you said the renaming the File works...are you using some kind of reserve words for name.

  • It's with the browser only. What's interesting is that even if I d/l the file and move it to a new site collection there's still an error. This occurs from what I've seen so far with 2013 Excel files. I haven't tested 2007 or 2010 versions.

I'm trying to get more info from the ULS logs. I don't have permissions to the servers so I'm awaiting that info.

No, the file names don't have any reserved keywords. For example if a file name is "Hello World.xlsx" I renamed it and added an underscore to "Hello_World.xlsx"

  • We ended up checking the permissions and granting (what was already configured) the account (running Excel Services) permissions to the content database.

Anyone have any ideas why this is needed? Other Excel files in the web app were already able to load in Excel Services?
