Missing Tape Recovery Points - Where Have My Backups Gone?! RRS feed

  • As you can see from the screenshot, we have Restore Points from April 2018, May 2018, June 2018 and July 2018 - where have August, September, October, November and then January gone?

    We have 2 weeks backing up to disk and then over the weekend it puts it on tape which is why you can see in the screenshot Restore Points for the 1st and 8th of March 2019 but not any other days during those weeks.

    We have 104 tapes in the safe so I know the restore points are on tape but why are they not showing up in any more, where have they gone and how do I get them back??

  • Hello!

    The default setting for tape catalog pruning is to prune the catalog when the protection group retention range expires.

    While under the protection tab, click on the "Specify tape catalog retention" link, you can choose different options if you like. 

    You might have to recatalog the tape(s), to recatalog a tape:

    1. In DPM Administrator Console, click Management on the navigation bar.

    2. On the Libraries tab, select the tape.

    3. Right click the tape and choose Recatalog imported tape.

    The recatalog operation determines the recovery points for data on the tape.

    Here's the retention for the long-term backup to tape:

    As far as I'm aware we've not changed anything on our DPM server so I'm at a loss as to why some months have disappeared.

    I could understand if all backups had been purged before a certain date but as you can see from the screenshot from my first post just some in the middle have disappeared.

  • Under Management I only have the following sections/information:

    • Agents
    • Disk Storage
    • Online
    • Libraries

    Under libraries it only shows the current tapes in the physical Tape Library we have.

    Where does it show the status of all the tapes (i.e. the ones we have in our safe etc) as I dont recall seeing that information in DPM before?

  • Under Management, go to Libraries > you should see the tape slots, expand them to see their status.

  • Thanks for your help so far :) much appreciated.

    Going in to the Tape Library only shows the current status of the tapes that are currently in there which will be from the last backup on Saturday as we've yet to remove them and put in spare tapes ready for this weekend.  Not sure how this will help work out where 4 months of backups have disappeared to though.

  • 104 tapes is going to take several days so not yet - due to the time involved to do this I'm not sure if it is practicable to do so.

    I would have expected DPM to have a list somewhere of the tapes it is aware of so I could at least not re-catalog tapes it already knows about and just the ones it doesnt.

  • I'm going to start looking for the needle in a haystack this morning...

    Lets say I find a tape that has some of the missing backups on, is it just a case of keeping it to one side or will it be listed once again in the list as per my original screenshot?

  • It should be listed, if not you can always go and view the data under Management > Libraries > Tapes (right-click the tape and view tape contents).

  • It's going through the motions but it's hit-and-miss if it actually re-catalogues the tape or not!  It claims to have done so but when you try and view what's on the tape it says you must re-catalogue it first, which I have done!!

    I hate DPM when it does silly things like this!

    The issue has only come to light because our technician who administers DPM is leaving and contrary to what I was told, there are not 104 tapes in the safe.  That's how many tapes DPM says are current tapes... there are in fact over 230 tapes in the safe, 104 are current and the others are 'free' tapes but they are all mixed in together so i'm having to sort them out first and then will have to inventory and re-catalogue them all to see if I can find the missing backups!

    Annoyed and fed up is an understatement right now!
