SharePoint 2013 List Quick Edit - The user does not exist or is not unique RRS feed

  • Question

  • When attempting to save after copying and pasting rows in a list using quick edit the save fails with a error message of "The user does not exist or is not unique."

Background:  These lists all have a "person" column.  The lists were migrated from SharePoint 2007 to 2013 using DocAve.  We're in an environment using ADFS and NTLM.

The other information I've found searching the internet seems to refer to a known issue with commas in display names (AD); we do not use commas in display names here.

  • Hi,

Please help verify the things below first:

    1. Did this issue occur when typing values in Person and Group field instead of copy and paste?
    2. What happens when just copying and pasting other fields without the Person and Group field?

And please also check ULS log for more detailed error message for further research.

And it would be very appreciated if you can reply back with the testing results.

    Best Regards,

    Victoria

  • Hi Victoria,

    1.  This issue occurs in both scenarios.  Copy and paste is the activity that our internal customer would like to do (and has done in the past) and this activity now fails.  Direct input of names also fails, however.  As does using the people picker to select an name from the directory.

    2.  The other fields (other than the "person/group" field) copy and paste without issue.

The ULS logs do not show anything of interest that I can tell, but I've pasted some data below from the log from the error timeframe.

  • Hi,

As the issue also occurs when selecting user directly in People Picker, I recommend to verify that if the issue occurs when selecting all the users in the both ADFS and NTLM.

If the issue only occur with the specific users, please compare the difference between the users and account without issue.

If the issue occurs with all the users, please re-check your authentication providers to see if anything wrong.

And please also check People Picker settings in your site.

  • Victoria,

    Sorry for the delay.

The issue is still occurring.  People picker settings have been validated and are not an issue.  Our authentication providers were also validated and are also not an issue.

The issue does not occur with specific users, it occurs with all users in an affected list.  It doesn't matter if the user chosen is the NTLM user or ADFS user; it still doesn't work.

I pasted the ULS log above in an earlier post - did you look at that log?  If so, any thoughts?  I would post a screen shot of the error but this board is not permitting me to do so (error message "Body text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account." which is particularly annoying as I'm an MSDN customer with a valid account....

  • Victoria,

This issue is not resolved.  Are you still planning to assist or shall I open a ticket?

  • Was this issue ever resolved? I am also seeing this same symptom, however mine only occurs on some users and not all. Additionally, if I edit the record itself and pick the same name from the People Picker it works. Not sure why using Quick Edit is not working picking the same name.

Let me know if anyone came across a fix for this.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • same issue here. and we are able to get around this issue by doing either of the followings:

    1. ask those users with the problem to log into the site collection once, or
    2. add them into any sharepoint group of the site collection

the theory is that, the people picker in the quick edit view can only lookup site users.

this has been tested on sharepoint 2016

  • Problem: Sharepoint  NTLM users are not restricted - Site Collection User Info may contain NTLM user and ADFS user items duplicate Name.

Solution: Check site collection user info list and delete duplicated NTML user account items.
