In place upgrade of Win 2008 R2 to Win 2012 R2 that has SQL 2008 R2 already installed RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Is it possible to upgrade Win 2008 R2 to Win 2012 R2, which already has SQL 2008 R2 installed on it ?

I've read different reports that SQL 2008 R2 service pack 2 or later may or may not need be installed as a prerequisite.

    Thanks

  • Hi AJC999,

In the minimum SQL Server version requirements for Windows Server 2012 R2, for SQL Server 2008 R2, you must apply SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 or a later update.

For more details, please refer to Using SQL Server in Windows 8 and later versions of Windows operating system.

But as Olaf mentioned, SQL Server 2008 R2 is out of support. It is recommended to upgrade SQL Server to the later version.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported on Windows 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 is out-of-support since August 2014; if the migration fails you won't get any support.

  • Thanks for that Amelia.

Yes, aware of SQL 2008 R2 being out of support. We are planning to upgrade this after the OS upgrade.

Good to know we should apply SQL service pack to SQL 2008 R2 before upgrading the OS !
