data error (cyclic redundancy check) when running windows server backup

    Question

  • We have a schedukled backup which runs to one of two dedicated external drives, one of which is taken off site whilst the other does a full backup over night.  When the backup runs to one of the disks it is failing with the following error: "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"

I have looked at some existing threads on here and chkdsk comes up a lot.  I have run this on the source disk, however we are using the "backup to a hard disk dedicated for backups" option which as far as I can see prevents me using chkdsk as the disk has no drive letter.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what I could try?

  • Hello David,

Please assign drive letter to the volume through disk management and then run chkdsk /R /F.

WSB does not assign drive letter to backup target to avoid inadvertent access of disk resulting in loss of data.

    Thanks

  • Thank, I have now done that and fixed the error on the disk.
