Removing _layouts/15/start.aspx# from the URL on the address bar RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have been noticing a problem with URL on SharePoint 2013 sites where the following gets added to in the URL in the address bar "_layouts/15/start.aspx#"

Does anyone know of a way to hide this? I have been looking at metadata navigation, but it doesn't appear to solve the problem

  • Hi, bRaD86,

You are noticing the URL with _layouts/15/start.aspx because the new feature Minimal Download Strategy is activated on your site.

To know more on how it works you can refer the below links

    http://www.hezser.de/blog/archive/2012/08/18/what-is-the-_layouts15start-aspx-in-sharepoint-2013.aspx

If you don't want _layouts/15/start.aspx to be a part of your URL you need to deactivate Minimal Download Strategy feature available under Site Actions -> Manager Site Features

Note :Minimal Download Strategy is a new framework which is been written to increase the performance of the SharePoint site.

  • Hi BRaD86,

You want to rewrite the url with a httpHandler. so you only get the correct url without any additions of _layouts.

    please take a look here:http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kaevans/archive/2010/08/04/deploying-an-asp-net-httphandler-to-sharepoint-2010.aspx

    kind regards,

We just started a migration... it's ludicrous that you need to lose performance in order to just get URL sanity.  When will this bug be fixed?

  • In our personal site I have some users going to http://mysite/_layouts/15/start.aspx#/person.aspx and others are getting redirected to http://mysite/person.aspx when the user clicks the 'About Me' link in the quicklinks.  The MDS feature is enabled for all users (including the ones without the funky URL)

We are trying to figure out how sharepoint is determining the redirects.

  • Yes, it is a shame! :(

Seems strange that a "minimal download strategy" would make URLs with so much extra fluff.

  • OMG YES Thank you so much! I'm new to sharepoint foundation 2013 and couldn't figure out why I couldn't access site pages, see/edit/sign in at the home page or edit the site settings until I homed in on this wierdness being added to the URL.
