Pinned folder from the taskbar, the folder opens in a new icon in the taskbar. (W8.1)

    Question

  • Hi, when i make new shortcut for download folder with *explorer* and *space* in front of the path name, right click on folder and pin to taskbar, when the download folder open, at the same time open another folder (separate) "this pc" and i don't know why. This happens on W8.1 not on W7.

On W7 it's very simple (with the same method but on w7 it work well). I have try many methods, but none of them work. Have any idea of how?

    Image example: https://image.prntscr.com/image/aNHdMlXSQO_jRwhhDT1-aQ.png

Image: left folder is the pinned folder, and the right folder icon opens when i click on the left folder (W8.1).

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

Would you provide a full string (Target name) of your shortcut?
      (1) right click on a pinned icon on the Taskbar
      (2) right click the icon name
      (3) click [Properties]

    (4) provide [Target] string

  • Hi Kapoios2,

Thank you for providing a string.
I tried it and it worked, but I could not reproduce the issue (even after restarting Windows 10).
i.e. only one icon is pinned/appears in the Taskbar.

How is your Taskbar settings? (right-click on the Taskbar and click [Taskbar settings])

    This is mine.

And how about delete(Unpin from taskbar) the second icon on the Taskbar?

    Regards,

    Ashidacchi

  • Hi Kapoios2,

Sorry for my misunderstanding (your Windows version).
I will try it in Windows 8.1 (virtual machine).
    Forgive me, please...

  • Hi,

I have tried in Windows 8.1 (Pro, 64-bit, display language=English, a virtual machine) and found nothing wrong.

Are you using some 3rd party software, especially enhancing desktop features?

  • Hi, thanks for you tried that.

"Are you using some 3rd party software, especially enhancing desktop features?"
    Can you become more specific?

In your image, you have try with "explorer.exe" shortcut.
Can you try with "download" folder instead of folder "explorer.exe" and write if the result will be the same?
Because, in my case, "explorer.exe", also works well.

I have this porblem, when i try with "download" folder.

    i.e. https://image.prntscr.com/image/IHh9dQK6SMe9meWv1kfmKA.png

  • Hi,

When I click a newly created icon ("C:\Users\<user name>\Downloads"), "Download" folder is opened as I expect, but at the same time another icon ("File Explorer") looks as if it is opened. (That's what you shown by your shared screenshot.)

But by watching carefully, I suppose, left icon and right icon would be switched, i.e. left becomes right (vice versa)... sorry I cannot explain what I saw in English.

It seems to be buggy, but I saw the same phenomenon both in Windows 10 and Windows 7.

You mean, you tried with "download" folder, and happened the same "bug" also to you?

  • So, you know how to fix this?
    Thursday, December 28, 2017 7:49 AM
  • Hi,

I have no idea about this. If you dislike this, please place the shortcut on Desktop, instead of pinning on Taskbar.

... alas! the same result. Explorer(s) on Taskbar are spapped.

I recommend to send a feedback to MS.

    Regards,

    Ashidacchi

  • Hi,

From my test, no matter Windows 7,8,10, when you create a shortcut with the explorer in front of it, then pinned it to the task bar. When you click on it, it will always open windows in Windows Explorer.

It is hard to explain but we can do another test:

Create an IE shortcut to open a website and pin it to the task bar. When you click the shortcut, it will always open in Internet Explorer.

Shortcut seems a shadow ,which will always lead you to open it in original application.

I don't know why you tested it in Windows 7 coming up with a different result. To observe it more clear, please unpin the File Explorer from task bar and pin the short cut to task bar. Then open the shortcut to see the result.

I hope my explanations will help you understand this behavior.

    Best regards,

    Vivian

  • Hi,

Again, I have "problem" with shortcut download folder.

    link gif with "problem": https://media.giphy.com/media/3oFzmfA7mWUlTpXUoU/giphy.gif

I do not know why it displays new icon on the taskbar rather than opening it from the original.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

Here are some steps you can try:

Unpin the original item by right-clicking on it and selecting the unpin option from the context menu.

Right-click on the newly spawned item.

Move the new pinned item to the location of the original item.

  • Do you have any Symantec products installed?

  • The issue might be because of any "second screen" product is installed.
