splwow64.exe keeps taking up lots of memory. Possible memory leak?

    Question

  • I have a brand new Windows 7 ultimate PC at home. I just recently formatted and did all the updates + antivirus (microsoft security essentials). This computer has 8GB of memory. Now I'm noticing splwow64.exe's memory usage climbing as the hours go on. Right now it's at 1.8GB. I've seen it as high as 4.2GB. I always end that process, but it comes right back and slowly climbs again.

    Any ideas?

Apparently this is related to  printer-spooling for 32-bit software?
What printers do you have installed? are the drivers up-to-date?
What 32-bit software are you running that may be trying to access the printers?

  • Hi,

The system uses the Splwow64.exe process to allow the execution of  32 bit programs with the driver layer of 64 bit systems.  this problem it may be related to The printer driver is probably not compatible with your Windows 7 so check that you  have the latest version of the printer driver, also take a look at these links they can help you:
