Unable to select target platform Microsoft Azure SQL Database V12 on VS2019 (SSDT) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to build a database using Visual Studio 2019 and SSDT and then publish to Azure SQL DB. When I build the database I am getting errors as I am using a temporal table, error message below.

sql46005: expected filestream but encountered generated instead

When I select SQL 2017/2019 and Managed instance  as the target platform, the build is successful. When I select Microsoft Azure SQL DB the build fails. When I complete a successful build using the target platform SQL 2017 or 2019 and Managed instance my release pipeline fails with the following error:

*** An error occurred during deployment plan generation. Deployment cannot continue.
A project which specifies SQL Server 2017 as the target platform cannot be published to Microsoft Azure SQL Database v12.
The Azure SQL DACPAC task failed. SqlPackage.exe exited with code 1.Check out how to troubleshoot failures at https://aka.ms/sqlazuredeployreadme#troubleshooting-

As I cannot select the recommendation, I cannot release the build to Azure SQL DB. The drop down list for the target platform does not give me the option. I can confirm that I am on the latest build as I only installed the software on the 20/12/2019.

When I down grade Visual Studio to 2017 the option is there. Why is this happening and is there a workaround I can use?

  • Hi All

Here is the workaround from the product team:

For the time being you can go into the json file for the project and manually target V12. Edit the sqlproj file.

    <DSP>Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql.SqlAzureV12DatabaseSchemaProvider</DSP>

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

  • Did you mean, you don't see the highlighted option in below screenshot? Please go to Help > About Visual studio and share the version that you have.

Below is from my VS 2019 with SSDT added on it.

  • Unfortunately I can't reproduce this. In fact, I have lower version of VS:
    Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2019
    Version 16.3.9

Go to Extensions > Manage extensions to see if there are any updates available

For a test, try creating empty database and see the target platform there.

Also see if the workaround in below helps or you may use VS 2017 for now.
