  • you can also restart the "Sharepoint Search Hosting Controller" service .

In this instance that would not have helped.  Although I know others have had a problem with the service eating RAM.  I suspect though that is due to them running SharePoint 2013 with too little RAM.  My server with 8Gb runs SharePoint 2013 without an issue.

  • Found it.

    Free Download Manager Explorer add-on.

Uninstalled Free Download Manager and all now works Ticky-Bo!

Sorry SharePoint and IE 10, it wasn't your fault.

I would never have guessed that your solution, merely adding the "Link to a document" content type to the document library content types, would fix this.  Amazing.  This would have been a Microsoft Support call.  I'm grateful, thanks.

My situation: SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise small two-tier farm, externally facing, patched through August 2015; deployed on Windows Server 2012.  I never experienced this for my internally facing farms.  Tried Search Host Controller restart, but no success.  FDM not installed.  Experienced this issue no matter browser type (Chrome, IE 32bit).
