DPM migration and import backup from the Type in new environment RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone,

In near future, we will migrate our DPM instance, but actually we need to launch new DPM instance in our new domain (because cross-domain migration is not possible).

Coming back to the topic - after that migration, I want to be able to read and import data written on cartridges, obviously before the migration period.

From the DPM perspective, are there any recommendation/concerns/.. ?

    Best regards

  • Thank you for clarifying.

The new DPM server in the new domain will not be able to read the imported data from the old DPM server from the old domain.

  • Yes, unfortunately you cannot backup and restore the DPM database from one domain to another.

In your case, you can do as you mentioned; Restore data and re-protect the data with the new DPM server.

  • Hello,

Is the plan to basically shut down the current DPM server in the old domain, move/migrate the backups to the new DPM server in the new domain?

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Hello Leon,

Yep, that's right. Currently we've got two DPM servers in two domains where new backups are landing on the new one.

I afraid about old backups on types after delete the old server.

  • Hello Leon,

Thank you for your response and interest.

The point is, I cannot migrate DPM instance because I need to change name and domain our DPM server, so I installed new clean DPM instance.

In this topic, I actually ask about recover backup from cartridge (tape) in new DPM server, where data was saved on cartridge via old DPM server.

The new DPM server with clean database will be able to import and recatalog data from this tape?

    Best regards,

  • Sorry I didn’t pay enough attention, unfortunately since there are a lot of dependencies based on the hostname of the DPM server, therefore you cannot rename a DPM server or move it to another domain.

Your option would be to install a new DPM server in the new domain and re-protect everything.

  • I'm "walking" this way. I already have two DPM servers.

But what with tape library and data restoring from it on new DPM server?

  • It is possible to backup -> restore a DPM database that is in the same domain, this is the only supported way of moving a DPM server.

If you want to move any kind of data (disk/tape backups) from a DPM server to another DPM server that is located in another domain, this will not work, as the domain name is different.

  • Recap - when I will try to do inventory or rescan your tape library, I receive type status something like "Free (contains data)" ?

  • I’m not sure what you are trying to do?

  • :)

My case: I've got types with backups made 2 years ago via "old-dpm.domainA.tld". Today, "old-dpm.domainA.tld" doesn't exists. Instead, we've got "new-dom.domainB.tld" server (it is clean installation, without migration).

Question - But what with tape library and data restoring from it on new DPM server? The "new-dom.domainB.tld" server knows nothing of the data, which are saved on the tapes (e.g. protection groups). Will the new-dom.domainB.tld be able to read/import that data ?

  • Holy sh*t! I was afraid that answer.. I assume, you are sure your answer. So we need to restore relevant for us backups to temporary storage, and then backup them againon the tapes via new DPM server (new-dpm.domainB.tld) ?
