Sharepoint 2013 - features randomly disappear from List View page (i.e., "New Item, Edit this list") RRS feed

  • Question

  •  We have an installation of SharePoint 2013 Enterprise, I am accessing with an Exterprise CAL.

I have noticed that seemingly randomly, the part of the list view page that shows "new task" (or "new item"), the list of views etc. disappears. It can happen with any type of list as far as I know. It can reverse itself (these features "come back") with no warning. I think but am not 100% certain that it only happens after I edit a view. When its correct the text "new task or edit this list " appears.

Another funny thing is that whenever the page is wrong (the features are missing, i.e. "new task or edit this list"), a new widget for "Add a new item" with a plus sign appears on the list view page, at the bottom of the list items, but that is never there for a page that's working correctly.

    Any ideas? Its EXTREMELY annoying.

  • I managed to replicate this by switching the List View web part to "Summary View". It appears to be reverting to the SharePoint 2010 UI.

To "fix" it, I just switched it back to any other view, and the "New Task" link reappeared. It looks as if its just how that view is configured.

  • Hello rbradbrook,

I have the same issue. Would you please me more in details how to "switch the list view web part to any other view"? I am not sure how to.

    Many thanks.

  • First you need to create a new view on the list itself. then

Edit your page, on the web part, click the little arrow in top right corner and edit the web part. Then in the view section you will have to pick the new view in your list. This will then use the new 2013 template for the view and should give you the newer style New Item etc.

There is a field in the database that can be changed that causes this but I still haven't found time to figure out if I can write a script that will change the property through the API so you can script all your views to upgrade to the new version.

  • I have found in SP 2013, that any view that does not use the "Default" style when modifying a view will not show the "New Item, Edit this list".

To restore "New Item, Edit this list", modify the view and change the "Style" back to "Default".

    Hope this helps.

  • Thank you very much for posting this advice, I just came across this issue and this response helped me solve the issue.

What a shame, the Shaded style really enhances readability of list views. I wonder if there's a way to make the "new item or edit this list" appear with Shaded styling of views.

    Thanks again

  • This is actually a web part related issue.

To enable the "new item or edit this list" you need to setup 'Default Chrome type' on the list view.

on the list page, under setting menu at the top, there should be an 'edit page' link. Edit the web part you want to have a chrome type then under the Appearance section change the chrome type to 'Default'.

The above is tested on: 12/02/2018, SharePoint online.
