  • You can Open or Edit Word Document using your Word 2007 or Word 2010 Desktop Client, However, Sharepoint 2010 and Office Web Apps supports Editing Word Documents using Browser or within the browser, Thats means you need not to open the document using your word desktop client.

If you want enable edit in Browser feature, you should install Office Web Apps in your SharePoint 2010 Server, More details can be found here :

  • My experience is that you will not get all features of Word 2010 in your browser. Hope I am true in saying that Office 2010 Web Apps cannot do everything that Office 2010 Desktop Client can do.

  • My understand is, you are looking to recreate the SharePoint Edit in Browser functionality outside of SharePoint Implementation,Please correct me if I am wrong.

I think OWA is only supported on SharePoint 2010

Web Front End components like Word viewing,Word Editing, Excel, PP  depends on the shared services enabled in your SharePoint Application Server.

Since Front End Components of Office Web Apps depends on SharePoint Shared Services, I dont think you can use them in you custom web application.

Refer this blog for Architecture and Implemention of OWA:

  • Thanks a lot...

Yes, I think you are right...

Now I'm trying to do my web application without OWA. I have an aspx page with a button and if the user click this, the application open a remote word document on Word Desktop Client.

Now I would like that the client can edit the document and save the document on the server...

but I have a lot of problem...I can open word document only in "OnlyRead"...

How can I do? (I build my application with VisualStudio, ASP.NET and C#)

  • You can try aceoffix. It is a web component that you can embed in your web app. It can open and edit Word document online directly.
