Clean install fails: Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working

    Question

  • Brand new Win2008 R2 (x64) Enterprise server. Loaded up the Sharepoint 2010 Setup ISO image.

Successfully launced and completed "Install software prerequisites"

Attempt to run setup to "Install SharePoint Server"...

Dialog box pops up: "Microsoft Setup Bootstrapper has stopped working". -- Setup then ends.

Rebooted --- tried again --- same thing.

    How do I run setup???

  • I got impatient waiting for a response on this forum and finally submitted a support call to the Microsoft SharePoint support team. An engineer got on the phone with me and told me that the .ISO file that we downloaded from the Microsoft Volume Licensing site was acknowledged as being corrupted.

He told me to download the .ISO from MSDN instead. He said the product key from MSVL would still work on the ISO media from MSDN.

He didn't know when the corrupted ISO image on MSVL would be updated.

  • I'm getting the same error.

    Frustrating!

RESOVLED/WORKAROUND:  I got around the error by downloading a new *.ISO to a hard drive instead of burning a DVD.

  • Today I downloaded another copy of the .ISO file from the Microsoft licensing site. This time I mounted the .ISO file on another computer, extracted the contents of the .ISO into a folder, copied the folder to the server, and tried to run setup from the server from the folder.

Still getting the same error. I'm not able to run SETUP AT ALL!

  • I have the exact same issue... extracted the ISO into a folder on C$ and it keeps failing, even tried disabling DEP.

  • I received this same error, but it was not due to a corrupted SharePoint ISO.  I was installing on a HyperV Guest, but this error occurs if there are not 4 processor cores setup in the guest.  Make sure you have 8GB RAM and 4 cores.
