SharePoint | Online | Case Sharing | Cannot delete SharePoint Team Site which is prevented by retention policy even if already add the site to the “Exclude” list of policy RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • If you are familiar with the "retention policy" under Office 365 security & compliance (https://protection.office.com/retention), you might try to add the sites to the “Exclude” list of your retention policy when you would like to delete the sites. However, you may find the policy is still blocking the site deletion with error "A compliance policy is currently blocking this site deletion".

In fact, the site you are trying to delete is a team site, corresponding to an Office 365 group. The other group retention policy would prevent all the stuff like site of a group from deletion as well. So, you also need to add the group to “Office 365 groups Retention Policy Exclude” before deleting the site. You should apply all the retention policy which is related to your specific “SharePoint site” and its “Office 365 group”.

If the group happens to be deleted by admin, however less than 30 days. Please firstly go to https://admin.microsoft.com Exchange admin center>recipients groups. Find the group and restore it, then go back to retention policy to proceed. If the group happens to be deleted more than 30 days, you might contact Microsoft Support for further assistance.
