Power BI with reporting services on-premise RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

There is a "technical preview" download available that allows for Power BI to be used to create and deploy on-premise visualizations and dashboards.  I called Microsoft for clarification but they did not have much info.  Is this technical preview part of the next service pack upgrade for SQL Server 2016?  Specifically, I am wanting to know whether SQL Server 2016 has this feature already built-in, is it going to be part of a new SP release, or will it be part of a brand new SQL Server version?

We are looking to upgrade to 2016 now but this will be a key feature we would like to use.

    Thanks,

    Matthew

  • Hi Matthew, the ability to view Power BI reports in the browser through SSRS will be part of SQL Server "vNext".

    From the blog here:

What’s the release vehicle for a production-ready version?

We plan to release the production-ready version in the next SQL Server release wave. We won’t be releasing it in a Service Pack, Cumulative Update, or other form of update for SSRS 2016.

The blog entry that you referenced above shows what is possible today in 2016, which is the ability to host the PBI file in SSRS, but it still opens in Power BI Desktop on the client machine. It will be the vNext version where it opens directly in the browser (like SSRS reports do today).

    Thanks,
    Sam Lester (MSFT)
