How much of Windows Server does a SQL Server DBA need to know? RRS feed

  • how much of understanding in Windows Server DBA must know without dragging him into the Windows Server administration hole, or must be in the first work as a system administrator and after that go to the next position as a DBA

  • Good question.. it all depends i,e where few companies which we work they do have OS team,storage team & Network team etc... so DBA will do only DBA part but if you ask me DBA should also know about windows knowledge & the surely will be an Great advantage.. also you cannot say that

    first I need to be OS admin then go for DBA... it all it depends on how we take it up..& grab it out..thats it..

  • Hi there,

    It is an open ended question. But mainly depends on how much you willing to pay. If you want an expert in sysdba and sql dba you will be looking for two skills set in one person.

    Bottom line for a SYSDBA: I would expect their System admin skills and to know basic knowledge of backup and recovery and experience in SQL server.

    SQL DBA: SQL DBA skills and knowledge in active directory, clustering. Windows troubleshooting.
