You can file a connect bug with the setup logs if you'd like.  From looking at this it appears that we are still detecting the SQL Server 2000 install and are having problems interacting with it.

If you have NO other SQL Server components on your computer, and you're willing to go on your own, you could try the following:

Using Regedit, delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer and HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server.

Using file system, delete \%program files%\Microsoft SQL Server.

This is very destructive but should get you to a cleaner state.

  • I have tried this , but with no results.I delete all registry keys that contain MSSQL or Microsoft SQL Server in their names.

Unfortunately I'm getting the same error.I don't want to reinstall OS , because it will take a lot of time to reinstall and configurate all again

    Error summary is:

Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.ActionExecutionException: MsiGetProductInfo failed to retrieve ProductVersion for package with Product Code = '{A43BF6A5-D5F0-4AAA-BF41-65995063EC44}'. • I'm getting the same basic error on one of my systems (a Home Premium install). The guid is different on the product and my error is 1605 instead of 1608, but the based failed to retrief ProductVersion for package is the same.

I'm still working on a solution - will post if I find one.

  • Thank you for your posting, Robert.

I also try with another SQL Server download and also get the same error. It seems that only reinstall Windows will fix my problem.

  • Hi Guys, in respond i can say i have the 1608 error to.

    1. I have visual studio for c sharp installed and if i want to install optional components, the setup complains that there is a component which cant be downloaded.
    2. if try to instal SQL as a standalone with a offline installation the SQL setup give error 1608 and says:

    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.

    ------------------------------

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

MsiGetProductInfo failed to retrieve ProductVersion for package with Product Code = '{A43BF6A5-D5F0-4AAA-BF41-65995063EC44}'. Error code: 1608..

    ------------------------------

    BUTTONS:

    OK

    ------------------------------

This error is kind obvious, because in the beginning of the standalone setup there is not even a option enabled to enter a productcode. so i think that's a bug maybe within the SQL setup, file : SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe

So there a 2 different errors on my XP Pro computer both regarding to the SQL Express setup.

    Has someone already a solution??

I tried everything with regedit, add/remove programs regar. SQL, restarted my computer, reinstall dot net framework, i even thought for a moment if it was my genuine system HAHAHA

Hope to hear from you guys!

  • Reinstalling Windows is likely the only "general" solution for this. What appears to be happening is that one or more previously installed products that SQL Server makes use of  (In my case, I'm pretty certain it's SQL Server Compact Edition) has reminants left in the registry somewhere. Unfortunately, while there is enough of the package left to cause SQL Server to think the product is there and attemp to find its installer package, there is not enough for even RegCleaner to see the shreads of it and know to clean it up.

As with the others who have experienced this, I know the GUID of the installer package that SQL Server is trying to find, but, even after extensive registry cleaning, I still have not gotten rid of whatever piece SQL Server is being tripped up by.

  • It has to do with MSXML6.0 this link tells you in detail how to remove it and reinstall

  • guess what? I've done it!!!! It cost me 3 times installing clean xp pro but hé.. trying after trying you find your solution!!!

    Solution:

    1. Install full XP pro, clean install

    2. Dont install any external program (you can install drivers for your system like chipset drivers etc... thats no problem)  use recommended updates in Windows Update
    3. Install iis services (so you can get the NetFrameWork etc.)

    4. Install XP SP 3 (why not.. its handy though!)

    5. Run Windows Update again, get Netframework 1.1 then later versions until you have at least netframework 2 sp2 (=minimal system requirements) p.s. Netframework 2 sp 2 comes with Netframework 3.5.
    6. Don't install any lite versions of 'compact netframework', my computer hade trouble with the full netframework packages.!!!!!
    7. Install your version of Visual Studio... é voila, SQL 2008 install fine!

    Thanks for support guys.

BTW... I read on some forum that installing express edition with advance services can give also problems with SQL install, not with me.. but did anyone have some?

This really did the trick for me. Reinstalling Windows is way too silly, if all that needs to be reinstalled is MSXML...

    Thanks!!!

  • Uninstalled MSXML Parser and MSXML 4.0 using Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) and then installed Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=993c0bcf-3bcf-4009-be21-27e85e1857b1&displaylang=en#filelist)
