building new sql server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Our SQL server currently runs on a Windows 2003 Server.   We run SQl server 2005.

I have just built a new box and have installed Windows Server 2008 as well as SQL server 2008.

I am looking for instructions on how to transfer my stuff (databases, jobs, etc) to the new server.

Any help would be most appreciated.

  • Hi Rockitman,

For database, you could backup in the original instance and restore in the SQL Server 2008 server. Or detach and attach your database.

For jobs, you could script job as file and run it in the SQL Server 2008 server.

Logins are kept in Master Database. So when you detach and attach your user database it will not transfer to SQL 2008 instance.  You will have script those logins from SQL 2005 and move them to SQL 2008.

Please also refer to the following KB articles:
