Update 2830477 breaks smartcard reader access for RDP sessions

  • I just a applied the latest Windows Update patches to my Windows 7 PC and after rebooting found that my Dell smartcard reader keyboard was no longer showing up on my RDP sessions (Windows 2008 R2 Terminal Servers).

After some investigation I discovered that by removing update 2830477 that it returned to normal and my reader appeared again. I also noted that the prerequisite patches, 2574819 & 2857650, are installed as needed.

Is there something we need to do differently with the new version of the RDP client provided by 2830477 as we cannot see any difference in the settings.

  • Hi!

We have the same issue. Using Windows 7 enterprise SP1 (eng).

After uninstalling KB2830477 it works again.

This issue seems not to affect Citrix-environments, though. If a client with KB2830477 starts a Citrix ICA session the card reader is still present.

  • We had the same behavior with Gemalto dotNET cards and USB readers. Removing the update corrected the problem. Thanks for the info... saved me a lot of headache.

Clients were Windows 7-SP1 both 32 and 64 bit. Servers were 2008R2-SP1

  • Hi, we are getting reports of this KB breaking TSWeb remoteapps (W2K8R2). Our users (Win7) can login to TSWeb, but clicking the icons wont launch any RDP packages. Uninstalling 2830477 resolves the issue.

  • This happened on my network too with Athena and SCM usb smart card readers. I never deploy RDP updates right away as they always seem to break something.

  • Hi I had this problem too, I decided to block this update to certain users on our WSUS and that worked but the next day I noticed that it had gotten blocked for everybody, is that possible that microsoft sends an update to disallow this update since it is apparantly broken?

  • Hi,

We actually found a solution for this, after a few hours here and there. We found that uninstalling 2830477 did not resolve the issue.

Open Regedit (note: only change registry configuration if you know what you're doing, messing up here could render a OS useless). Navigate to the following:

Select win64 key, right click, Change permissions.
    Click on Advanced Permissions
    Change ownership to yourself
    Give read permissions to everyone.

Fun fact I am one of your clients :)
