Can the Application Discovery and Load Balancer SA be a member of more than one proxy group? RRS feed

  • Question

  • A 2013 farm is configured with the default proxy group and a single custom proxy group.  These proxy groups have the same members except that the custom one has an additional Managed Metadata SA and is dedicated to a specific web application.  I have added the Application Discovery and Load Balancer SA to both proxy groups as well.  The Application Discovery SA seems like a special SA - will it adversely impact Application Discovery and Load Balancer SA performance to have it be a member of more than one proxy group?

  • Hi Stephan Bren.

The Application Discovery and Load Balancer service provides information about the topology of the farm to users who are using services offered by the farm. Users can use this information to perform load balancing; the Application Discovery and Load Balancer Service should be running on at least one server in the farm.
There is no need or reason to add that service application to another proxy group: leave the default configuration created by SharePoint.

    Bye.

  • Hi,

Why do you add the Application Discovery and Load Balancer SA to both proxy groups?

  • That's what I'm trying to find out: whether it needs to be.

  • Luigi - do you know of a Microsoft reference/document that you can point us to on this?

I'm not aware of any Microsoft documentation that clearly states that you should not put the Application Siscovery and Load Balancer service application into more than one service application proxy: that service application is automatically created during the SharePoint farm's configuration for all the web applications to be aware of the farm's topology.

    Bye.
