  • Justin is correct. We're finalizing the table of contents now and plan to start writing in July. This will be an Unleashed eBook - about 400 pages - and will include R2 and the stuff about OpsMgr 2007 that we didn't get in the first book because after 1400 pages we thought we'd better stop :).

We'll be posting status updates to http://ops-mgr.spaces.live.com.

    Thanks,
    Kerrie

  • Hi Neall,
All content is complete and it is being turned over to the publisher this week for the production cycle. I hope to have approximate availability dates available shortly - as soon as I get the production schedule.

However, due to the fact that it is originally being produced in electronic form only (as a PDF), it turns out it can't be preordered. No one seems to have the capability to preorder an ebook! :(. The publisher will be changing their systems to accomodate this, but I suspect the R2 Unleashed book will be ready before that happens.

The good news is - since its an ebook - you will be able to get it about a month sooner than if it had to be printed.

Once people start ordering the ebook, as soon as the publisher can see the numbers justify the cost of printing a supplement, they will do so. So you will originally be able to oderder it as an ebook and then shortly thereafter (I hope shortly!) as printed copy.

I will post approximate availablity dates for the electronic version to this thread as soon as I have them.

  • The print version of the book can be preordered through the publisher at http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0672333414, with availability  April 16. Discounted price $35.99, with free shipping. (List price is $39.99.)

You will be able to order the PDF/electronic version from the InformIT page as well once it is available. The list price for the PDF will *probably* be $27.99, with a 10% discount offered. However, there should be a significant additional discount (approx 65% off the PDF, making it less than $10.00) if you buy the two together as a bundle. Availability of the PDF will be by April 16 at the latest.

You can also preorder the book on Amazon, at http://www.amazon.com/System-Center-Operations-Manager-Unleashed/dp/0672333414/. The discounted price there is currently $26.39, which is a 34% discount off list price. Amazon also offers free shipping. Amazon's availability date is April 26, 2010. It typically takes 7-10 days from the time the publisher has availablity for retailers such as Amazon to have it in stock. You will NOT be able to get the PDF through Amazon, that must be ordered at the InformIT site.

Please keep in mind that this is a supplement to the original System Center Operations Manager 2007 Unleashed (available at http://www.amazon.com/System-Center-Operations-Manager-Unleashed/dp/0672329557 / http://www.informit.com/store/product.aspx?isbn=0672329557 and elsewhere). The R2 book contains numerous references to chapters and material in the first book, to avoid repetition.

If you are attending MMS, the authors and contributors are scheduling a 30-minute "meet and greet" side session on Wednesday April 21 at 3 pm. This will be near the CommNet area. Hope to see you there!

  • Hi Babulal,

    Thanks for your interest.
All the chapters are complete and we are near the end of tech review. We hope to be able to have a preorder site available shortly.
If enough people preorder the book, the publisher will also make it available in printed matter so you would be able to choose between printed and PDF format.

Information on preording will be available at http://ops-mgr.spaces.live.com, http://systemcentercentral.com, and elsewhere as soon as that is set up!

  • Hi Babulal,

That would be a *really* large ebook!! :)

Actually, it does not not include the content from the old book. The R2 supplement will have nine chapters (unless the publishers split one of the chapters into two), and three appendices. The first chapter is Chapter 1 (versus chapter 24), and although we're not far enough yet in the production cycle to see the final page count, it will be somewhat under 500 pages.

If you haven't bought the first book already, you may still want to do so, as the R2 book does reference content in that book.

I hope to get the production schedule in the next week to 10 days and then will be able to post approximate availabiity dates. The holidays slowed things down a bit ...

  • Update - the publisher expects to have the electronic version available in mid-March. I will update this thread as more information becomes available.
Note that like software, dates are always subject to change for reasons beyond our control ...

  • Expect availability of the electronic version in mid-March, according to the publisher today. I will update with more information as it becomes availabe (including how to order the electronic version!) Note that the electronic version (PDF) will be available only through the publisher. Amazon does not sell electronic books other than Kindle format.

  • Funny you should ask that - if you had asked a week ago I would have had a much different answer. A lot has changed since I last updated this thread, and it is all good news.

I am now able to confirm that there will be a printed version of System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Unleashed (supplement to the previous book). This will be avalable for order sometime in April. This print version is not contingent on the number of ebook/PDF copies sold in the first two months.

The PDF will continue to be available only on Pearson's InformIT site (not available yet as it can't be preordered) - current availability date is now March 30, which is when you will be able to order it. The URL for this is not yet finalized.

The printed version will be available at Amazon.com and other electronic resellers. This is advance information as it is not listed there yet (not sure how much of it will show up in the brick and mortar market). List price for the printed book will be $39.95 US. The PDF was originally priced at $34.95 but this price will be changing to a somewhat lesser price - I don't have that number available yet. If you order both through InformIT you will get a discounted price for the bundle.

Once I have more specifics I will update this thread.
