Can SCVMM 2012 RC1 manage a Windows 8 Server Developer's Preview Hyper-V Host

    Question

  • I have installed Windows 8 Server Developer's Preview on a DL380 G5.  I have added the Hyper-V role to it.  I have imported two VMs from SCVMM 2008 R2 using the VMM on the Windows 8 Hyper-V host.  I have created a new VM on the Windows 8 Hyper-V host and installed SCVMM 2012 RC1 (with SQL 2008 Ent. Edition).  I have added the Windows 8 Hyper-V host to a Host Group on the SCVMM 2012 RC1 guest.

The problem is that in SCVMM 2012 RC1 checking status of the Windows 8 Hyper-V Host, I get a Critical Error 20505 - The nvspwmi service cannot be located on the computer win8server-01).  win8server-01 is the netbios name of my Windows 8 Hyper-V Host.

My first question is - can SCVMM 2012 RC1 manage Windows 8 Server Hyper-V Hosts?  If no, then I guess, that is the problem.  If the answer is yes, what can I do to resolve this error so that I can manage my Wnidows 8 Server Hyper-V Host and its VM Guests thereon via SCVMM 2012 RC 1.

Note:  I have tried to start the nvspwmi service on the Windows 8 Server Hyper-V Host, and it just states that the service doesn't exist - though Hyper-V is running perfectly on the Host, and I can do all management and monitoring activitings on the guest VMs on that Windows 8 Hyper-V host via the VMM thereon.

Please advise....thanks in advance to all who help.

    BTW - SCVMM 2012 RC1 - Rocks!!!

  • No. Not only are Windows 8 hosts unsupported, they change several key things that make them impossible to manage with SCVMM 2012.

  • Will SCVMM 2012 install on, and operate on a Windows 8 Server Developer's Preview system?

  • When will this ommission be fixed? As Hyper-V is one of the major improvement areas of Windows Server 8, it is rather irritating that you can't yet test it properly.

I would suggest that as the toolset and capabilities are a major factor in competitive considerations of using vSphere versus Hyper-V that you should get a working beta agent out of the door for testing ASAP.

  • I assume support will be added for Server 8 once it RTMs? I think we all understand things have changed but if SCCM 2012 can manage and deploy Windows 8 then I would assume the 2012 line of VMM would be able to do the same thing once Hyper-V 3.0 is released. From what it sounds like VMM 2012 will never be able to do this. So we will have to wait for an R2 or something?

  • There have been no official announcements regarding future VMM products, unfortunately. However, based on previous release cycles, I would expect Windows 8 to be supported by VMM once Windows 8 server is RTM. For Windows Server 2008 there was an R2 release of VMM 2008 which added support.
