xml file as data source RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I've got a couple of network boxes that don't do snmp, they do provide some performance statistics via a web page that comes off as an XML file.

Using other monitoring tools (Nagios/Zenoss), I can parse these files and use the data for statistics, does SCOM/SCE have this capability? I've searched on this and drawn a blank so far.

    TIA

  • One could do it - but it is a complex undertaking involving writing a custom data source in XML, and having that data source output the correct translated data types (counter or event).  A powershell script of a VBscript that uses the DOM would be able to make sense of the files.  The script would have to make the web connnection.

What kind of devices are they?

  • Storage devices as I understand it there aren't any standardised MIB's for storage boxes hence why they don't support it.

It could also be done by scraping a standard html web page but I'm guessing this is as difficult, any way of doing it from a telnet script, I think you can get to a basic CLI on them.

  • Hi,

One way could be to use a script that reads the XML file and input it as performance data to Operations Manager, see http://contoso.se/blog/?p=213 for a example script
