Agent works fine but after some time can`t connect to gateway server . Error 20071. Solve by restart service UserManager on Gateway server. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have gateway and agent servers on some domain. Agent works fine and send perf counters, but after some time can`t connect to gateway server. On event log found error 20071:

The OpsMgr Connector connected to p-scom-gtw02.abb-win.akbars.ru, but the connection was closed immediately without authentication taking place.  The most likely cause of this error is a failure to authenticate either this agent or the server .  Check the event log on the server and on the agent for events which indicate a failure to authenticate.

We tried restart service HealthService on agent and gateway - didn't work. All agent servers became unsupported(gray icon on SCOM console) in some time. We use WS 2019 Standart.

Trouble is solved by restart service UserManager on Gateway server. But it works a some hours and problem returns.

  • Hi Dmitry,

So you're saying that the agents are working normally and are shown as green (Healthy) for some time, and at some point the agents becomes "Not Monitored" or "Grayed out"?

Have you made sure the agents are using the Full computer name of the Gateway server?

You can check the current values by checking the following two registry entries the SCOM agent computers:

    • NetworkName
    • AuthenticationName

    Registry path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Operations Manager\3.0\Agent Managed Groups\<MG Name>\Parent Health Services\0

    More things to check:
SCOM – Agent In DMZ “Not Monitored” Event ID 20071

    Best regards,
    Leon

Yep, 6-12 hours agent servers have status green

yes, NetworkName  and AuthenticationName use full computer name on registry.

  • Have you ensure there's no network connectivity issues between the agents and the Gateway server? Or does this happen like a pattern, every 6-12 hours daily?

Do you have multiple Gateway servers in your environment? If yes, is there a failover configured for the agents?

After we restarting UserManager service on gateway the agents are work normally and are shown as green, then, after some hours, we getting error 20071 on all agents is monitored by this gateway server. The problem is actualy until we don`t restart service UserManager(also help reboot host, but it`s equal to restart service).

Generally we have a several gateway servers, but in that network segment - only one. So the agents is not a failover configured.

  • Hi Dmitry,

I coud be wrong, but if really the restart of the UserManager service temporary fixes things then I would say that SCOM is just the victim here. UserManager could have an imapct on the applications on a server and this case it seems to impact SCOM. What I am trying to say is that you should consider looking closely at the behaviour with the the User Manager, becasue it just might be that SCOM only experiences the effects of this.
Writing in the Windows Server 2019 Forums would be also not a bad idea. Here is the link to the Windows Server 2019 forum:

    Windows Server 2019 General

I would aslco check the "System" event log on the GW at the time the issue can be reproduced. The Application log also. What related events do you see there?

  • Agreed with Stoyan, the problem may very much not be with SCOM.

  • Hi,

Agree with the above, if the UserManager service has some problem. some applications may not operate correctly. From our phenomenon, it seems the issue is with the service. As you will deploy on other windows server and will also check on the Windows server 2019 forum, we will wait here. If there’s any update, feel free to let us know.

    Best regards.
    Crystal
