XP clients install software updates, Win 7 do not install software updates

    Question

  • I have Win XP Sp3 PCs that pull updates correctly, but Windows 7 machines do not.

If you run the Windows Update function against SCCM, it returns no updates needed, but then against Windows Update online, it returns them. Now here's the clincher: the ones that the online version returns are in fact being deployed to all workstations and the Win 7 machines should get those same updates. It pulls non MS updates that I have published to SCCM though.
Lots of those updates I don't want or need but there are security updates I have deployed that should show when I hit SCCM.

The original UpdatesDeployment.log had the below errors, but the current one is clean:

Advertisements seems to get to the systems without issue, even if they don't always execute correctly.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  • Only on two systems out of about 30. I have the Reporting services role installed and was using Troubleshooting 1 - scan errors to produce the report.

  • Did you check Event Viewer logs? What do they show?

  • Hi,

First, please check if there are any boundaries overlapped.

After that, please go to change the Duration in the Display/Time Settings; change the update installation settings in the properties page of the Software Updates Client Agents node to made the update mandatory.

    Reference:

    New Software Update Management Tools

Please go to one of your client with problem to take the following suggestions:

    1.    check if the Windows Update service is enabled in services.msc;

    2.    check if Windows Update in control panel;

    3.    please reset them and restart the computer.

If the issue persists, please provide the detailed Windows Update.log from one of your client, the ccmsetup.log and WUAhandler.log for further research.

    Regards,

    Sabrina

  • Sabrina:

The Mandatory deployments value is already selected "Enforce mandatory deployments" I did change the setting from one day to 7, but the issue isn't with updates with a future date, but updates often with a mandatory install date long since passed.

Windows Update is enabled and in the control Panel. As I stated in my original post, I referenced using Windows Update to show the differences between what SCCM is showing as needed on the system and the online version. The updates are deployed in SCCM, like for like of what should show on Windows update (except the drivers, which I don't pull down) and it is only Windows 7 machines.

  • Some updates install (MsiInstaller runs fine) but the other deployed ones don't.

  • the above WU.log suggests ConfigMgr is successfully scanning for & finding "patches are needed".

so, check that the patches are available for download & deployment.
on the affected Win7 client, dig into UpdatesDeployment.log & UpdatesHandler.log
may need to work backwards from there, check CAS.log, LocationServices.log

it seems like it knows patches are needed but patches are not part of a resolved boundary, or patches not in a package or deployment, for this client.

I've checked the perms on the WMI location and they look fine, but maybe I'm missing something. What should they be?

  • at this point, i'd be considering the value of digging any further. consider how many affected machines there are and what your time is worth.
i'd be tempted to uninstall ccm, nuke DDR for this client in the db, then reinstall ccm.
if that's a bit extreme for you, you could consider comparing a known-good WMI to this one. (lot of effort, methinks)
or, research the arguments for and against a "winmgmt /resetrepository" (you might need to repair/reinstall ccm agent anyway)

being a Win7 machine I'm assuming it hasn't been abused over many years (leading to a progressive meltdown of integrity), the question for me is "why is WMI being so ornery?"
something in the imaging/build method you're using? something deployed to your Win7 machines that is mucking with WMI?

  • Hi, I got similar issue Failed to open to WMI namespace ....

Apply the patch mentioned below. My issue got resolved. You need to update the SCCM server patch KB2509007  and then update the client with PATCH="C:\_SMSTaskSequence\OSD\<var style="color:#333333;font-family:'Segoe UI', Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, sans-serif;font-size:12.727272033691406px;font-weight:bold;line-height:normal;text-align:left;"><Package_ID></var>\i386\hotfix\KB2509007\sccm2007ac-sp2-kb2509007-x86-enu.msp as  mentioned in the below URL.
