SCCM 2007 ISO Image Will Not Deploy "Error 0x80070017"

    Question

  • Built ISO image of a task sequence using a known good WIM file.  Burned to DVD.  Machine boots to WinPE, formats, and begins staging the SWM file.  Failure occurs near the end of that step.  Dialog box gives no clue of the cause other than the error code.  Any ideas?

Thanks.  Got the same advice from premier support.  We were advised to go to SCCM SP1 which includes WAIK 1.1.

We will be rebuilding even though there is an upgrade path.  We have done so much troubleshooting, we fear there may be issues later on.  A clean install of SCCM SP1 would make us feel more comfortable.

  • Thanks for the link.  Most of that information concerns logs to search for errors.  The issues we are having concern a stand-alone DVD deployment where the task sequence is written to an ISO image. The ISO is burned to a DVD and the DVD formats the PC and begins the deployment.  So there is no communication with the Deployment Point or the Master Server.  We tried two known good WIM files as the image.  These WIM files deploy by pulling them over the network and using Imagex.  Unless we are missing something, we see no way of harvesting log information.  Task sequence goes through formatting the PC and fails during "staging" of the SWM file.

Will try and F8 and find the x:\windows\temp\smstslog file tomorrow.

  • F8 and the smsts.log file in x:\windows\temp\smstslog will hopefully provide some more detail on what is failing.  This is the log written by the task sequence as it is executing.

  • Unable to get F8 to open command window.  Found the log in C: after booting to WINPE after the failure.  Checking it now.

  • Error 80070017 is a CRC failure, which is occurring when the TS tries to copy the content for package LAB00058 from the DVD.  So, tt looks like either your WIM (I assume that's what's in LAB00058) is corrupt or there's a problem with the DVD itself (bad ISO or bad physical media).  You might want to try recreating the full media ISO then re-burning the DVD.

  • Thought of that and tried three different ISO builds between two different WIM files.  We suspect a corrupt boot image.  We are starting again with a new boot.wim.

Thanks again for your assistance.  We may not pick it up again until Tuesday AM.

  • Strange.  Tried a completely different boot.wim from WAIK.  Same error.

  •

Our WIM file is approximately 4.3GB.  Apparently there is a 4G file size limit somewhere that causes the WIM file to be spanned into two SWM files (file000.swf and file001.swf).  My guess is that the "staging" process is not handling the split image.  Your thoughts, anyone?

  • Hi Kellymd,

    Try this steps below :

    Download WAIK 1.1

    Install WAIK 1.1

    Restart SCCM Server

And put in the BOOT Image

    Create new TS

    Burn it

    Try deploy it again.

    GoodLuck

  • Was this issue ever resolved?  I am seeing the same issues.  I have used multiple .wim files and I have created a new boot images as well.  Any help would be appreciated.
