HP EVA Management Pack RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Hi All,

I have developped a management pack to monitor the performance of an HP EVA
SAN. It is based on the evaperf.exe command. It has several collection rules
and one monitor for the latency. It is a work in progress but if anyone is
interested in posting it on their blog (I dont have one yet) let me know. I'm
hoping it might be usefull to someone else and that the Opsmgr community
might add to it so it becomes even more powerfull.

    TIA

  • Hi,

Sounds interesting. Have you compared it with the EVA MP from HP?
You could contact Pete at systemcenterforum.com , they have a lot of community MP over there.

  • Hi Alan,

I would be more than interested! We also did a HP EVA Mgmt pack - but based on the HP perfmon counters .. which is a little bit unstable with the R2 RC agenet (that's putting it kindly). If you're interested I can send it to you.

Anders, the HP Mgmt Pack has "only" alerting built in. No performance monitoring, no reporting,  etc. It is just a very thin layer on top of the normal EVA Mgmt software. If you ask me, nothing to get too excited about.

  • I have looked at the one from HP but like Stephan said It has no performance monitoring. I have based my MP on evaperf.exe because the perfmon counters are not stable. It has been running for more than a month now and seems reliable.

Thanks for the offer Stefan. I'd be interested at taking a look at your MP. I can also send you the one I built.

  • Hi everyone!

This MP would be very nice! I appreciate this!

Because HP Storageworks- MP (also v1.5.2) has a few bugs (fc- switch and eva) I'm thinking about designing my own MP.
Maybe you all will share your work to the community?!

    Best regards,
    Patrick

  • This is definitely interesting for the community! thanks for sharing this with us! The EVA MP at the moment is indeed very basic so nice work!

Can't wait to test it in my environments!

    thx,
    Alex

  • Hi All,
Is the EVA MP posted anywhere? I would be interested in this. We have SCOM R2 eval working right now, but the new HP MP does not seem to monitor our EVA.

  • Alain has just send me an email with his management to post it on the scug.be site:

    There ya go:

  • Hi,

Looks really good. I will try it at one customer. I have tried the one from HP, but it was pretty complicated and did not provide a lot of data.

I'd appreciate your feedback when you give it a try.

    Thanks

  • Alain,

your MP looks great! I'm testing it right now and it is really nice! Thank you!

One question from my side: why do you use evaperf.exe and not the performance counter integrated in windows perf.monitor?

  • So, because of the bugy HP StorageWorks- MP...
...how do you monitor your EVA/XP storage arrays for any hardware failure?

    Nice weekend,
    Patrick

  • Just tested it myself and really like it.

I just showed your mp also to our storage guys and now I've to implement it erverywhere! :-)

    Thanks Alain for this MP!

  • Hi Patrick,

I think I can answer this: The monitoring via perfmon counters is extremely unstable because the piece of software from HP that provides these counters crashes all the time. Basically it is unusable.

We learned it the hard way that this is not working. If you're interested, I can send you a MP based on perfmon counters. But as I said, good idea but unfortunately it doesn't work in real life.

Alain, we have implemented your MP now. Works like a charm!

  • Stefan,

I saw it a few minutes ago: the counters crashed and I've to enable them again with exctrlst.exe (and reboot SMA).
"Good" to know that others have the same problems with this counters.

Anyway it would be nice to see what you've done with your counter based MP.

  • Thanks for all the replys, I'm glad to see you guys like it. Stefan is absolutely right, the MP is based on evaperf because the perfmon provider is not stable. For hardware monitoring we are using Insight Manager and are working on an integration with OpsMgr throu Webess. It's not done yet and I don't know all the details but someone on my team is working on it.

A note to those who implemented it: watch the performance impact on the machine where the MP is running. The MP has a lot of scripts to gather the performance data. If the performance impact is too important you can disable some performance collection rules that you don't need.

    Cheers.

  • hi Alan,

I'd like to collaborate with this MP. I'm workin with SCOM R2 RTM and i probe the StorageWorks MP.

  • Hi Martin,

Check out version 2 of the MP. Alexandre Verkinderen was kind enough to put it on his blog.

Sorry for the late response but I have away for a while. Your MP sounds great. I have a blog so I can write about it.

  • Hi Marnix,

I would certainely appreciate your feedback if you try the MP. You can find it here: http://scug.be/blogs/scom/archive/2009/06/29/hp-eva-performance-management-pack-v2-for-opsmgr.aspx

  • Hi Alan, Thanks for the MP.

One think i recommend to add in the MP .doc is to execute the evaperf fnh [hostname] [username] and then the evaperf fn prior to install the MP.

This is really useful to better understand the counters

    Martín

  • Hello,

We implemented the HP EVA Management Pack V2 this week and have found it quite useful.  There is one problem though and it just might be something we need to configure:  The EVA State View does not get populated, however, all the Performance Views are populated.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Sven
    Friday, January 29, 2010 1:53 PM
  • Hi Sven, the discovery that populates the view only runs about once a day (72000 seconds), so it might not show up right away. The discovery is based on a script that extracts the information from "evaperf ls".

  • Hi All,

The HP EVA MP has been entered into the System Central Management Pack Extensions Contest. You can download the latest version, vote and leave your comments about the management pack here:

  • Hi, I have imported HP EVA Performance Management Pack V2 on our SCOM server two days back. No data is being populated for the EVA. I have enabled EVAPerf.Discovery as per the document. I could see the management pack downloaded to the agent(EVA management server) but no vb scripts(EVA performance)are present on the agent. Please help me in resolving the issue. I am unsure if I have missed anything else to complete. Regards, Vishnu

  • Hi Vishnu,

Is you Command View\EVAPef server 64-bit? Check where do you have a evaperf registry keys - Software\Hewlett-Packard\EvaPef OR Software\Wow6432Node\Hewlett-Packard\EvaPef ?

By the way. We're just finished the v3 of the HP EVA Performance MP. It will be published within a next week or two, I think.
