Update fails to download on all clients RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings!

I recently deployed 32 updates @ 8/14. Within this deployment I have one specific update that will not download to the clients. I researched the update and most of the errors that I see in the 'Computers in a Sepcific Enforcement State for an Update' report are coming back as 'LastErrorCode=2147023436' which looks to be a timeout issue.

UpdatesStore.log shows the following, indicating that the client knows that it should have this update:

    <![LOG[Queried Update (b1514612-6bfa-4faa-9352-2a0a8d05cff3): Status=Missing, Title=Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2862772), BulletinID=MS13-059, QNumbers=2862772, LocaleID=.]LOG]!><time="10:56:09.426+000" date="09-02-2013" component="UpdatesStore" context="" type="1" thread="2284" file="cupdatesstore.cpp:1189">

I've verified that the update has been downloaded and is available on the Site Server. The clients are stuck downloading this update. Not sure where to go from here. Any ideas?

  • Hi,

I recommend that you can update the package, the package on your DP might be damaged.

You can also make a new deployment package including the update failed and new deployment.

    Best Regards,

    Joyce Li

  • Hi The job seems to be suspended. Is his the only package having problem with deployment? Usually errors of this nature is due to boundaries issues http://blogs.technet.com/b/configurationmgr/archive/2009/11/04/some-configmgr-2007-clients-never-install-packages-report-status-of-waiting-on-content.aspx

  • Hi,

You can examine the CAS.log, UpdatesHandler.log and windows update log to troubleshoot this issue.

  • To answer your questions:

    1. There were 32 patches within the deployment. 31 of the updates were downloaded and installed successfuly and are reporting back as completed. Only one update out of the 32 total updates is 'stuck'.

    2. I don't believe this to be a boundary issue as I can see in the WUAHandler.log that the client is selecting the correct WUA Managed Server, CCM Client information shows that it's attached to the site and reflects correct information for the Primary Site Server.

So in summary I can see in the UpdatesStore.log that the client is flagging the problematic patch as missing. It raises the event and passes it along.

In the CAS.log I can see a download failure. Unfortunatley I do not know of a way to correlate the PackageID GUID with an UpdateID GUID to know for sure that this is the issue.

In the UpdatesHandler.log I can see failed download as well with a slightly different error.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

  • Hi Joyce. Thanks for the feedback.

I did a content refresh for the patch on the Deployment Package. I also removed the patch from the advertisement and then re-added it. Will let those changes bake in and let you know if there's any change.

  • Hi ,

I would suggest to update the DP, if Refresh is not working in this case and make sure that u have select the option  Allow clients to fallback to unprotected distribution points when the content is not available on the protected distribution point under software update deployment setting. Reboot the client machine.

Restart the SMS Agent Host service and then Automatic Udpate Service. Go to confmgr properties under Control panel and initaite Machine Policy then Software update scan and finally Software udpate Evaluation

Mointor the CAS.log and make sure that it content is successfuly downloaded in cache.

Post any error observered during the installation.

    Hope this will help !!!

  • I removed the patch from the deployment. Re-deployed patch in a new deployment. Successfully downloaded and installed update following re-deployment. Roughly 1/3 of the clients have reported back into SCCM as having the update installed.

    Resolved!
