P2V using SCVMM 2008R2 sp1 without Hyper-V Host possible?

  • We have around 15 physical tower servers in our office, each of them dedicated for a specific role such as ADS, Exchange, IIS, SQL, Oracle etc running over various Windows OS such as win2008R2, Win 2008, win 2003 etc.

All these tower servers are 75% utilized to there storage and computing capacity. We do not have any SAN nor a Hyper-V host in our office.

We have decided to move all these servers into a Datacenter where we will put up new robust Rack servers. We then also plan to use Hyper-V in our datacenter & wish to migrate our office physical server into the datacenter as a VM's.

Therefore we now have the challange to convert the physical servers in our office into Virtual Machines.

We installed SCVMM 2008 R2sp1 on a highend desktop system at our office & decided to convert our physical machine to Virtual machines. But we are stuck as it seems that the P2V conversion using SCVMM also requires a Hyper-V host where the converted VM  will be placed. We do not have enough resources at the office to setup a Hyper-V host.

Is there any way we can use SCVMM R2sp1 to do a P2V conversion and store the VM temperorily on a USB storage so that we can then move it to our datacentre, just like how we do a Export/import of VM's on hyper-v host
