SQL Server 2012 stops running after setup files are copied. RRS feed

  • Question

  • SQL Server 2012 setup stops running after setup files are copied.

I've experiencing the same issue on two different machines. Both are 64 bit running Server 2008.

On both of them I tried installing using the files from the ISO. I initially used winzip to extract the files. The setup was running fine, but the SQL Server engine had an error when it installed. Then using the Add/Remove programs i uninstalled all of the SQL Server 2012 applications, including the setup files.

Now when i try to install using the "New SQL Server stand-alone..." wizard it will copy the setup files and then the wizard never comes back. I've tried mounting the ISO, extracting with winrar, Burning the ISO to a dvd and downloading the 3 files. I also tried mounting ISO of the version that was just recently released. I run into the same issue with all of them.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Hello,

Have you enable .NET Framework 3.5 using Control Panel -> Programs and Features?

SP2 is required for Windows Server 2008. Is SP2 applied on those computers?

Is SQL Server 2012 setup able to download updates before installing Setup Support Files?

    Hope this helps.

  • .net 3.5 is enabled on both. Both servers already have SQL Server 2008 R2 on it.

One machine has SP2 while the other has SP1. I'm making sure they are both on SP2.

The setup appears to download the updates. After i click the "New SQL Server stand-alone..." link the following happens:
Setup Support Rules - Everything passes. I click OK and the "Please wait screen pops up".
Product Key - I select Evaluation and click Next.
License Terms - I accept and click Next.
Product Updates - Finishes and goes to Install Setup Files
Install Setup Files - Finishes and the "Please wait" white screen pops up for about 1 second and goes away. Nothing else happens.

    Thanks!

  • Hello,

What edition of SQL Server you are installing?

Have you considered downloading the media again?

Please review all software requirements of SQL Server 2012.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx

Are these drives compressed or encrypted? SQL Server won’t install on compressed or encrypted drives.

    Hope this helps.

  • I meet all of the requirements.

What i don't get is that it attempted to install the first time and failed. But now if i try to reinstall again with a different media it won't get past copying the setup files. It copies them(i think) and then nothing happens.

  • I am also having this same issue as sar1372, exactly.

First Attempt to install, all Prequisites passed; install started, and ended saying nothing installed because Dependencies where missing.  engine was not installed.
I then uninstalled everything that did get installed.

Now when I try to install....   Install Setup Files - Finishes and the "Please wait" white screen pops up for about 1 second and goes away. Nothing else happens.

    Any Help would be appreciated!

  • Hi,

I was facing the same issue and the solution was to do with permissions. Just change the security settings on the folder  C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2012 so that the user being used to install has all rights.

    Regards,

    Ashif

  • Hi,

I think I experienced the same issue :

I try to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 Developper. So I took the Upgrade option.

The setup seems to stock for ever into the the first step of the setup "Scan for product updates".

I got the absolute control of this station. I did to give full control to the folder  "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2012"

and did try to run the setup from the command line prompt but no seems to work. If someone got something please share.

    Regards,

    Huy Son

  • Hello guys.

Same problem here with a brand new Windows 8 Pro x64 (Ita) installation. I used the .ISO file to install SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition on a Windows 7 x86 machine: no problems.

Performing the same operation on the new machine (the one with Win 8 x64), the setup remains in the "Installing Setup files" step and never ends.

    Any idea?

    Thank you.

    Marcello

  • Hi Ahmed,
    thank you for your answer.

I tried to install SQL Server manually from the same ISO (running setup with /x86 option) and the setup completed.

In my case, it's not a problem to have SQL Server 2012 Dev Ed. running as an x86 application. I'm working on a development machine.

    Regards,

    Marcello

  • I have the same situation Marcello have: Windows 8 (Enterprise), 64bit - all Prequisites passed.

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition and Setup infinitely remains in the "Installing Setup files" stage.

I already tried to un-compress the ISO and use setup.exe /Action=install /x86 - nothing helps.

    Any more suggestions?

Thank you, it's work!!! :) Maybe problem was in /UpdateEnabled=false and I could try to install a x64 version... but too late, setup in progress and I do not want to have to try all over again :)

  • I also had the same problem. But I has been rectified by using the following steps

    1. Grant the current user full privilege to  "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2012" folder

    2. Uninstall 'SQL Server 2012 setup (English)' from control panel

    3. Perform a system restart

    4. Execute this command with administrative privilege:  setup.exe /Action=install /x86 /UpdateEnabled=false

  • THANKS!!!!  This solved my problem.

    I wasn't clear on step 4 - I went to startup - Run - E:setup.exe /Action=install /x86 /UpdateEnabled=false where my install DVD was in the E drive.

  • Friends,

I am having the same issue when installing SQL Server 2012 Trial version 64-bit on Windows 8 Pro. The above command setup.exe /Action=install /x86 /UpdateEnabled=false does not work on my machine because its a 64 bit. I have also tried setup.exe /Action=install /x64 /UpdateEnabled=false and setup.exe /Action=install /UpdateEnabled=false   and it doesn't work. Instead i get a message something like "specified value for Action is invalid"

But the command setup.exe /Action=install  works for me but still the Installation stops after the step - Installing Setup Files. Please help me i have been struggling with this everyday since the past 7 days.

    Thanks

    Syed S Ahmed

  • Hello,

Syed, did you ever resolve this? I am having the same issue after a failed install and attempt to uninstall. It is consuming my weekend to no avail. I was able to partially install the 32 bit version and got SSMS up and running. I uninstalled everything again and got back to the same point where it quits after copying setup files. Cannot get to the 64 bit version install wizard. I'm about to concede and reinstall Windows 8.

    Thanks!

  • I had the same problem: first install fails,  clean de-installation impossible, next installations ending just after the setup files are copied.
I tried all that 's written here without getting out of the problem until i read on the "sql journey blog" the solution.
It  explains changes in the registry database to get over this issue.

  • Hi.  I had the same problem and did not want to install the 32-bit version of SQL as sugested by the forum results.

I downloaded the SQL2012 SP2 installation and had the same symptoms with that.

I then managed to solve it:

I went to Control Panel / Programs and Features and uninstalled "Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Setup (English).

This was not easy, as it told me that there are dependents (e.g. SQL Server 2012 Browser, and other SQL 2012 software).   I could not uninstall these dependents as they were not in the "uninstall" list.

So, I used good old regedit and deleted the SQL 2012 or 110 folders, mostly under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft.    Note: You can make a bigger mess if you delete keys here so be careful.  Good practise to make a backup before you start.

I then managed to uninstall the sql 2012 setup.

Now I coudl install SQL 2012 without any hassels.

THIS solution given on blogs.msdn.com (adding a patch to the Registry + rebuilding the Setup Bootstrap folder from the original ISO) was the ONLY one which has worked for me! The ONLY one.

I tried many others solutions given here (including re-downloading the ISO, extracting it in another folder, running setup.exe through Administrator command line, removing setup info from the Registry, adding "Everybody" with total control under the Security tab of the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server, copying the contents of this folder from another working PC to the faulty one, uninstalling everything from the Control Panel...), and NONE worked...

So, many, many thanks to you, @airyck, and @HarshDeep_Singh (the author of the blog article).
