Anyone tried VMware vCenter Server with ESX hosts?

  • Install ESX (or ESXi) hypervisors (lets call them host #1, host #2 & host #3)

Install vCenter Server (also needs a database, SQL Express will do)

Add host #1 (wait a bit), add host #2 (wait a bit), add host #3 (wait a bit)

A working and fully managed virtual infrastructure without any of the painful rubbish that VMM insists on putting in your way to trying to set up the equivalent MS environment.

Microsoft - how could you get it so wrong!?

  • Thank you, all interesting and brilliant stuff and I am very excited by future MS products. I'm not opposed to MS products - on the contrary I'm a huge fan (since ca. 1986 for the PC and before that Commodore).

It's just Hyper-V and VMM are truly outstanding in how much they fall short when compared to the competition. As an infrastructure manager and engineer it's an absolute no-brainer - VMware every time. But I wish very much for it to be the opposite.

  • Sorry, mixed up my Technet/MSDN/VLSC accounts there (a minor bugbear - not being able to merge my accounts.)
