renaming a virtual machine in hyper-v

  • I have a request to rename a virtual machine.  I know that to do this I should rename within the guest.   The question I have is:   if I rename the VM, how will this name change affect the naming of the vhd file?  Will the vhd filename change?  If not, how do I change the vhd filename so that both are consistent?

  • You need to put the VM in stop state (either in VMM or hyperV). The deployed vhd for the VM will be generally under Programdata\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\<VMName>. Rename your VHD to what you like. In HyperV UI go tot he Settings on the VM and rename the .vhd file name under Media in the IDE controller section.
